Restaurant for business dinner

by Leovero

I must take out to dinner some business associates in Bucharest, but I have not yet been to this city. From the tips here on Virtual Tourist it seems that Mazagran or Locanta Jaristea may be suitable.
Which one would you choose? Or can you suggest better ones?
We shall be a group of 8 and only a few of us from Romania, but not from Bucharest. It is important for me to make a good impression and I want to offer really the best of Bucharest.

I'm not 100% updated with the new restaurants but if you are looking for a traditional Romanian restaurant then you should go to Casa Doina. It was awarded by being the best restaurant for traditional Romanian cuisine. Last year I was there and the food was excelent. The location is one of the best in Bucharest. I have never been to Jaristea but I saw their site and reviews and I have not a very good impression about it. Even if my friends liked it very much, they told me that the service is not great.
Caru cu Bere is a nice restaurant. The downside is that it's too big, a lot of smoke and the food is average. It's nice to go there with the gays for a beer though.
New restaurants like La Mandragora (it seems tht their site was suspended; I hope the restaurant is still opened) and Heritage (http://www.heritage-restaurant.eu/) have very good reviews. My friends recommended it as well.

Good Luck and Enjoy Bucharest!
Elena

I forgot about Casa Vernescu http://www.casavernescu.ro/(French Cuisine and one of the most luxurious restaurants in the country). With this restaurant you could really impress your business partners.

Casa Vernescu seems the right place for the dinner I have in mind.
I will try one of the other suggested restaurants when I will dine on my own, since I will have a free day for visiting and shopping.
Another question: are there no-smoking rules in restaurants?

In terms of business dinner, here are some (strong) recommendations :
- Heritage (recently reopened, high class cuisine, a Michelin 2-star rated chef)
- Casa Vernescu (famous, very good service, eclectic architecture)
- Avalon at Howard Johnson Hotel (fusion cuisine)

Both Caru cu Bere and Locanta Jaristea are a good option, but for an authentic Romanian experience (somewhat far for business purposes).

Of course, de gustibus ...

All the best,
Daniel

Generally, restaurants have a delimited no-smoking area.

All the best,

Thank you! You confirm my idea that Casa Vernescu is the right place for the business dinner, and that I should go to Caru cu Bere on my day off.

Romanian Bank for Development

by codrutz

Newest highrise building in town and probably the highest up to now in Romania. Not a really skyscraper, but pretty high.

This is the headquarter of Romanian Bank for Development, one of the biggest banks in Romania.

Nicolae Iorga Park

by iwys

Parcul Nicolae Iorga is a small park at the top end of Calea Victoriei. On one side of it is a beautiful Romanian Orthodox church. At the centre of the park is a statue of Romania's greatest poet, Nichita Stănescu (1908-1982), who was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature. His most famous works are: O viziune a sentimentelor/A Vision of Feelings, Dreptul la timp/The Right to Time, 11 Elegii/11 Elegies, Necuvintele/The Nonwords, Un pământ numit România/A Land Called Romania, Epica Magna/ Great Epic, Opere imperfecte/Imperfect Works and Noduri şi semne/Knots and Marks.

Bucharest Mall

by Andraf

Bucharest Mall is a modern shopping mall that opened in 1999. The building in which it is located has a bit of history. It is part of a series built all around the city at Ceausescu order. They were intended to be used as produce markets but I believe only one or two opened before December 1989 which was the end of Ceausescu's era. The rest have been left incomplete and abandoned for a long time. Their official name was "Complex agro-alimentar" but they were known to everyone as "hunger circuses" (the reason being that their dome-shaped design looked a lot like Bucharest's circus building; and hunger because people didn't really expect to find any food there despite the official word). Anyway, the past is in the past :-) the building got a good facial and today it looks a lot like a US mall. It has over 70 (expensive) stores spread over 4 levels, a large supermarket, a food court with over 20 restaurants, a multiplex cinema, a video games arcade and ... I can't think of something else to enumerate but it has almost everything one needs. It even has a big parking lot, a true rarity in Bucharest.

Easy to get around

by mstancu

Metros are an easy way to get around Bucharest. You don't usually have to wait for more than 10 minutes for one, or around 5 minutes in peak time. Prices per trip are low, however if you're planning to stay for a while a ten trip card is recommended.
