  • Most favorite hotel in Bucharest

I am traveling to Bucharest on weekly basis. I have tried more 4*-5* hotels, but only one has become my very favorite - Athenee Palace Hilton. It has a very good location in the center of Bucharest, easy to reach both offices in different directions I use to work. The rooms, breakfast and health club are great, but what I appreciate the most is the kindness and profesionality of the staff. No matter if it’s someone from reception, housekeeping, restaurant or management, I always feel very friendly way of hospitality and a will to do the things best way possible. This is perhaps the main difference among experiencies in other Bucharest hotels I stayed in.

Unique Quality: kindness and profesionality of staff, good location, feeling secure

    a Bucharest landmark

The Athénée Palace Hilton is a Bucharest landmark building. It was originally built in 1914. In the 1940s residents included both the Gestapo and British spies. Int the 1950s it was said that every room was bugged by the communist government. Nowadays its 272 bug-free rooms are used by business travellers.

The hotel was purchased by the Hilton group in 1994 and in 1997 a new 7-floor extension was added at a cost of US$42 million.

The Athénée Palace is a luxurious five star hotel. Its facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a gym, sauna, beauty salon, casino, French and Italian restaurants and an English bar.

    Classical interiors, Modernist shape...

There are hotels, and then there are legends. History has had its bites of happiness and sorrow with Romania, and all of them have passed through the lobby of the Athenee Palace. The love affairs of King Charles the 2nd, the secrets of the Nazis during WW2, the Soviets' ultimatums of 1940, the wide ears of the Securitate agents in the 1980s, all of them, just like people ordering a tuica or a couple of sarma, have passed through this hotel, its lobby or its English Bar. The rooms have everything one expects in a 5* unit, but, if you come at the Hilton, stay at the Hilton and choose an Alcove Room overlooking Revolutiei Square and the reason for the name of the hotel, i.e. the Athenaeum. Compared to these ones, the "standard" rooms in the glass covered backyard concrete box are simply not worth looking into. Just like at the Marriott, there is a taxi driver mafia around (possibly the toughest in town), so beware in what kind of car you get, for otherwise you will pay dearly.

Unique Quality: As Mr. Hilton said himself: "if I were to describe the three best features of a successful hotel, they would be: location, location and location". The rest can be seen on the website.

Directions: It is located in Revolutiei Square, just near the Athenaeum and across the street from the Royal Palace.

The Athénée Palace Hilton is a grand hotel steeped in history and Old World charm. Built in 1914 in the Beaux-Arts style and remodeled and refurbished several times since, it is located in the heart of Bucharest and fittingly faces another architectural gem, the Romanian Athenaeum.

The location of the hotel is matchless—within walking distance of many of the city’s museums and theatres, the not-to-be-missed Old Town district, several city parks, and, for recent-history buffs, Revolution Square.

The hotel staff, especially the concierge team, was exceptionally courteous, professional, and helpful; although the décor of the room was slightly dated, the room itself was unusually large, immaculate and, best of all, very quiet. The breakfast was excellent, the service absolutely outstanding. When the weather cooperates, there is an attractive terrace that is perfect for outdoor dining.

Bucharest’s Athénée Palace Hilton deserves every one of its five glittering stars. Highly recommended.
