Bucharest from Serbia
by malashen
Hi, please advise me, how long would it take me to travel from Belgrade to Bucharest by car (distance and timewise)? What is the quality of the road? Many thanks in advance!

I'd say about 8-10 hours (from Belgrade mostly along the Danube to the Iron Gates crossing then through Turnu Severin-Craiova-Alexandria or Pitesti to Bucharest).

Me, I would take the overnight sleeper, but if you must travel by road, then allow more than ten hours. The route through the portile de fier is probably the best route, but Romanian roads are being renovated so you could hit unsigned roadworks. And then there are the truck drivers on bonus and the carts with licence plates and no lights. If you go through Timisoara, then watch out for the roadworks between Lugoj and Craiova. Some people recommend going through Deva to Bucharest, due to the condition of the roads between Lugoj and Craiova, but it can take 10 hours from Timisoara to Bucharest. I have no recent experience. As I say I go by sleeper.
The road on the Serbian side is through the mountains and not recommended for night travel. You can get the distance off google earth. Average speed in Romania is about 60 kph.
Be careful buying cigarettes as you come through the border. The customs may not let you bring them into Romania.
Travel Tips for Bucharest
Clean, free bathrooms
by Dabs
Having experienced some pretty bad toilets in parts of Eastern Europe/Russia, I have to say I was surprised at how often we found really clean free toilets, at restaurants, museums, gas stations, on trains. I did not have to resort to using the McDonald's toilet even once on this trip, I think that is the first time ever :-) And they were always stocked with toilet paper!
Carol Parc
by draguza
Carol Park (Romanian: parcul carol) is a public park in Bucharest, Romania, named after King Carol I of Romania. For the duration of the communist regime, it was called Liberty Park (Parcul Libertăţii). The park was designed by French landscape artist Édouard Redont in 1900 on Filaret Hill and inaugurated in 1906. The park had an initial surface area of 360,000m², with a 20,000m² lake in the middle. It is officially recognized as a historical monument and is therefore protected by law. Administration of the park is undertaken mostly by the Bucharest City Hall, whereas monuments are in the care of the Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs
Cycling in Bucharest
by Fam_Stoica
Yes, indeed, cycling is still in an incipient stage. Since last year, there are some bicycle lanes (only as a delimited/marked part of the sidewalk). Many of them are unused. However, if you can rent a bike, it's a good idea to make such a trip. Here are some possible routes :
* Cotroceni Palace - Botanical Garden - along the Dambovita shore - Izvor Park - Parliament Building - Unirii Square
* Herastrau Park - Charles de Gaulle Square - Victoria Square
Fares : 40-50 RON/day (helmet included) bike, helmet
Bucharest Mall
by draguza about Bucharest Mall
Bucharest Mall is a modern shopping mall that opened in 1999. The building in which it is located has a bit of history. It is part of a series built all around the city at Ceausescu order.
The building got a good facial and today it looks a lot like a US mall. It has over 70 (expensive) stores spread over 4 levels, a large supermarket, a food court with over 20 restaurants, a multiplex cinema, a video games arcade and ... I can't think of something else to enumerate but it has almost everything one needs. It even has a big parking lot, a true rarity in Bucharest. Anything really...from food to clothes
It's very flat and there's lots of farmland
by Phildagr8
If you're not driving, then bring a book, have music or sleep, because there is a lot of time can be spent driving from one point to another!
There is a lot of farm land around the areas. In the little towns, you'll see fences with benches (where people wait for the bus).
You might see the 1 and 2 horse drawn carriages, too!
