2009 advice: Airport to Intercontinental Hotel

by Numberfive1

The latest posting with airport to hotel transfer advice was 2007. I'm looking for latest advice on best way to get two 60's something people, each with a suitcase, to the hotel from the airport. It would be great to take a bus, but with suitcase and carry-on? And we don't know our way around Bucharest.
Thanks,
Sharon

It's fairly easy to do it by public transport: you can take bus 783 (it passes by both of Bucharest's airports), get off at "Piata 21 Decembrie" station (at Universitatii square) and then just walk across the street to the Intercontinental hotel.

You could also do it by taxi: a ride from Otopeni airport to the Intercontinental hotel shouldn't cost more than 70 lei (€17) and from Baneasa airport no more than 20 lei (€5); be careful to avoid the rip-off taxis that would charge you a lot more, use only company owned taxis.

I recomend you to use suitcase with wheels !!! I am 33 years old and all the time I use suitcase with wheel ( - : it's make the life easy.

the bus as taseg mention are at -1 floor exit, use the elevator,
you will see at right side exit at -1 floor RATB kiosk for tickets.
one magnetic card with 2 ride will cost you 7 lei.

when you get off at piata universitatii you have cross way jast behind the station and from the station till the hotel is 50 +- meter.

Travel Tips for Bucharest

Romanian Senate

by gosiaPL

I was gonna shrug off taking a picture of this uninteresting building till Ion, my taxi driver and guide, said: "You want this picture" and explained that the building used to be the headquarter of the Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party.

It was here in front of this building that the people of Bucharest made the Ceaucescu regime to crumble in Dec 1989. Fire was shot at people (one can still see bullet holes in the building opposite) but it didn't stop them - they came back to claim their freedom. I was moved to see the scene of the events that I only saw in TV news back in 1989.

It was on this balcony above the entrance that Ceaucescu gave his last speech before fleeing to Targoviste where he and his wife were executed by the firing squad.

Today the building is the seat of the Romanian Senate.

Giving flowers

by lchelle

If you choose to thank someone by saying it with flowers, you should be aware that certain customs surround this!!

ALWAYS give an odd number of stems, an even number is only given at funerals.

Romanians dont ever send flowers, they are always GIVEN.

It is only acceptable to give women flowers. Men will be offended!

Follow these and you cant go wrong!!

Pantelimon Lake

by kek4la

Just behind the high rise apartment buildings, Bucharest reveils to you a totaly different story. A lake and a quiet village behind it. This shows how radical transformations affected Bucharest after WWII, and how parts of Bucharest were left untocuhed by communists until the regime's ending in '89. Also in the foreground, at right, you can see how people throw trash here because it's a less travelled area.

Train Bucharest to Brasov

by graeme83

There are direct trains to Brasov from Bucharest almost every hour. The first leaves at 0550, with the last being at 2350. The journey time is about 3 hours, but will depend on the service. Check bahn.de for up to date times (using stations Bucuresti Nord and Brasov as your station locations). The train I had was modern and comfortable on both legs of the journey.
