I would suggest to take the train. You can book a room in a sleepung car, I do not think it will cost you too much. I think you can take a room with 6 beds for your whole family.
The train is as follows: it leaves Bucharest at 19.50 and reaches Chisinau at 8.50 the next day. You can make a reservation in advance. When you are in Bucharest go to one of the CFR travel agencies and buy tickets and get the most information ;).

You may have problems because at one time some drivers will only take you to the border. You could try Nichita Stevanov at nichita_s@hotmail.com, or nichita_s@yahoo.com or 0401-777-6257 - his French is better than his English. If you think that the trains are bad, then you will have a heart attack on the roads. Nichita is a good driver, but it's the oncoming traffic that causes the problem. At least you can sleep (the sleepers are quite good) and walk about on the trains, especially if you get the Moscow train. There are several long distance coaches that go from Bucharest to Chisinau

If you are still looking I have the number for a MaxiTaxi company based in Chisinau that I used on 4th March to Chisinau and 8th March back to airport in Bucharest. From Chisinau they left from Auto Gara Central at 6pm and arrived at airport at 3am, 2 hours before my flight.
From Bucharest they will collect you from the airport if the time is convenient and take you to the door in Chisinau. Cost for me, single male, 300MDL and 350MDL return because I asked to go to airport direct.
They guy that drove me did not speak English.
PM me if you want number.
Kevin
PS I will use them agian on 15th April when I go again.

Travel Tips for Bucharest

BUCHAREST HISTORY

by alirom

Romania's capital, the nation's centre of cultural and economic life, was founded more than 500 years ago and is a natural starting point for visits to the country. During the 1930's its tree-lined boulevards and "fin de siecle" architecture gave it the nickname "Little Paris". There is even an Arc de Triomphe on the impressive Soseaua Kisseleff which is longer than the Champs Elysees and has ranges of trees which flower beautifully in the spring.

Despite the massive reconstruction of the 1980s, Bucharest remains a Garden City, leafy and pleasant, with cafes open on sidewalks in the summer, and with boats on its lakes and rivers. Finding your way is easy in Bucharest. The underground network offers a standard fare and covers most of the city. Major boulevards run North-South from the Arcul de Triumf (Triumphal Arch) down to the Centrul Civic (Civic Center), crossed by others going East-West. Calea Victoriei - a continuation of Soseaua Kisseleff - is the place where the city's inhabitants prefer taking strolls on summer evenings and where you will find majestic public buildings like the National History Museum and the main Post Office, whereas close to its Southern end there is the lovely Parcul Cismigiu (Cismigiu Park). Bulevardul (Boulevard) Magheru is parallel to Calea Victoriei and it hosts tourist and airline offices, cinemas and hotels. You will be intrigued by the city's eclectic mixture of architecture, from Curtea Veche, the remains of Prince Vlad Tepes 15th century palace - he was the city's founder as well as the inspiration for "Dracula", - to Orthodox Churches, Second Empire mansions, the stolid Stalinist architecture of the communist years and the colossal 6,000 room Parliament House, the second largest building in the world after the Pentagon.

Rainy day in Bucharest

by codrutz

Nobody likes rainy days, when clouds block the sun from lighting the place you want to visit. These days (28 december 2004), instead of snow we have rain. This is pretty odd for the average climate in the area.

Excuse the picture quality. This is taken out of my office window with my mobile :)

Monastery in the city centre (Antim)

by josephescu

when you walk on Unirii bulevard to take a picture to the Ceausescu's megalomaniac house of the people, at the end of the bulevard turn left, walk behind the blocks of flats, and within 100m you'll reach a pictoresque monastery called Antim. Usually, there'll be some beggars in front of it, but don't bother, just enter the courtyard and you'll fell like a trip in time.

Going there will give you an idea about how the area used to be before Ceausescu demolished everything to build its' palace and the "civic centre" surrounding it. Before demolitions, the area was occupied by narrow streets, private villas and hotels, churches, monasteries...... Now all that's left of that good_old_times_flavour is hidden behind concrete blocks of flats from communist era, while some houses are in ruins, after their owners have been expropriated and left the country in the early to mid 80's. After the owners abandoned their homes, gipsies moved in, and you'll find some still living there.....
