TRABANT/ LADA anyone

by FruitLover

Hello folks,

Is it possible to buy (East German)TRABANT in Bucharest/ Romania for less than 5ooEur, or other reliable old car like Polski Fiat126P, (Russian)LADA Niva???
We need it for about 5000km trip around Black Sea in July.

Thanx in advance,

Avi

Reliable cars ? You cannot be serious ? Most all modern cars are much more reliable than those. I think you are trying to say CHEAP.

These cars are not reliable (especially in this price range), they will break down often and spoil your trip.
Anyway: it is possible to buy a Trabant for less than 500 euros in Bucharest but it won't be very easy, there's not that many of them left;
- Polski Fiats are extremely rare, it's unlikely you'll find one;
- Lada Niva is surprisingly expensive (over €1000) and relatively rare;
You could also buy a locally produced Dacia 1310, those older than 14-15 years usually cost under 500 euros (don't expect it to be reliable).

Right now I think to go around Black-Sea 2 different times:

one:
Varna- constantza-odessa- Crimea and back to Bulgaria

second:
Burgas- Istanbul- Turkish sea shore to Trabzon and back.

SKIPPING GEORGIA. not recommended, ABKHAZIA is a war zone.

Planning first phase of Bulgaria => Romania=> Ukraine, and back, for 7-8/2010.

When I was in Romania about 2 years ago, we bought ourselves a Dacia 1310 sport. Try to find someone who knows about the car-market, we were taken to an open-air second-hand car market where everyone who wanted to sell his car gathered.
These cars are not very reliable in general; most of them are old and usually full of defects. However, the advantage of buying a dacia (or something alike) is that these cars are very simple and very common. If anything breaks down, you will usually not have to worry about finding an impossible electronic problem or not being able to find spare parts.
When our car eventually broke down, we found everyone willing as well as able to help, because everyone knew the type.
(I really love these old cars, by the way. Very proud of the old Dacia-logo I have on display in my home. My dream car would be a lada Niva, i guess ;))

Good luck on you trip!

Travel Tips for Bucharest

Obor - not so dangerous...

by edvin_br

Some people who arrive to Bucharest hear a lot of things about of the neighborhood that called "Obor". Most of the things they hear are bad...
So yes, its true that its a area that was built in the communist era and its dirty, noisy and full of blocks... but i dont belive that it is so dangerous to hang out outside by night...
You can see this place in an all other view, the area is always full of people, at least at day hours, and it dosnt look like a boring place, there is a huge park in the area and the most importent thing is that the stadium of the great club Dinamo Bucharest is here...
I had the chance to be in Obor a few hours... i was in an old communist block... not so bed from inside, really... from there we went out to the lively streets of the area and i saw a park, a fountain, a lot of traffic and one car almost squash... but you know, thats how it is going in the big cities...

Bucharest Financial Plaza - Main Tower

by codrutz

This is an office building, so if you really want to take a walk inside and aim for the rooftop to see Bucharest from above you really should be very insistent to get past the guards :) If you don't, you'll just have to stay down and admire the building from outside.

Bowling and Billards For Rainy Day

by ddlucy

What to do on a rainy day in Buchurest?

We found a billards parlor called "Texas" with 8 modern bowling lanes. The billards tables were crowded, but the bowling lanes were open.

3 of us rented a lane for about $15/hour
