In and out of Bucharest
by virtual786
I will be arriving in Bucharest from the Varna area of Bulgaria on 10 July; time unknown. My flight leaves on 11 July at 6:50 in the morning from Otopeni Airport.
Would it be better to stay at a hotel in the city and take a taxi or a shuttle van to the airport or to stay at an airport hotel? Most of the hotels at the airport seem fairly expensive and I've had problems in the past with the hotel shuttles at odd hours (not in Bucharest, of course).
I'm looking for the best ideas for accomplishing this, at the most cost efficient way.

hello,
you need to know that hotels from bucharest are expensive too (not as those from airport but they are) to get in town you'll need to suffer for the traffic wich is a hell. charge for a taxi from airport to town is at least 15 euros + turn back so... if you don't want to visit the town, you should stay in the airport :)

I stayed at a guesthouse in downtown Bucharest for two nights last summer. The room was clean- shared bathroom- and free breakfast-- for the price it couldn't be beat (about $35 a night). Look up hostelz.com and search for didahouse. She does offer an airport shuttle/pickup service (not sure of price) which would avoid the issue of taxis altogether.
Travel Tips for Bucharest
Sala Palatului
by Andraf
If you feel that you can't have enough of the communist architecture, here is another gem that you can admire. I hope that you can sense the sarcasm in my tone; if not, I want it to make it clear. This one was built in the 1960. You can find it behind the National Art Museum (former Royal Palace). The building was used to host the five-yearly communist party congress.Today it's used as a big venue for concerts and exhibitions.

Minimum you should pack
by monica71
one suitcase or expandable duffel bag (you will need the extra room for taking back home all the things you will buy) and one small backpack Comfortable shoes (1 pair of sneakers and 1 pair of nice shoes with a flat sole for going to a nice restaurant or a show in the evening), 2 pairs of pants (1 nice black pair will do just fine to wear at a show and also during the day when you go to a nice museum or restaurant), 3 T-shirts, 1 nice blouse, 1 sweater and a light jacket. If you visit during late fall or winter, make sure you have a warm jacket with you, hat, gloves and warm boots (no high heels!). You can buy everything in town, so you really do not need to take medication or toiletries with you. Of course, prescription medication is an exception to the rule and you need to take it with you when you travel to Romania. Lots of film or a big memory card. In case your memory card gets full, there are plenty of places where you can take it and have your pictures transfered to a CD. Good guidebook that will help you decide where you want to go and what you want to see. There is lots to do and see in town and you need to have a plan. If you get lost, don't panic. People there speak pretty good English and they will gladly provide directions!
They got it all in Bucharest
by ddlucy
They got it all in Bucharest. No need to pack food or bottled water - you can buy it in several modern shopping markets "Bella" - plenty of well stocked small markets.
There are several small "American style malls" and even some large "warehouse style stores" (Carefour).
Nice Romanian Wines make a nice gift to bring home ($4-5/bottle) Romanian souveniers were more expensive in the City, then out at the touriest sites.
Food is very-very reasonably priced.
Clothing is more expensive in Romania - then in the US.
Your train ain't coming no more.
by Romanian_Bat about Gara Lipscani Bar
Gara Lipscani is a student & poor favorite, with a poor, simple and cheap lively place. What does this mean? Simple: food comes fast, food is tasty, food is cheap. Therefore food is good. And no, it is not a restaurant, but they have food. Then: beer comes fast, beer is cheap, and beer is tasty. Then beer is good. You’ve missed the train anyway, so have another beer. Dress code? What is that?
Use only airtransportation,...
by Cestovatelka
Use only airtransportation, BUT NEVER EVER fly with TAROM (local airline). They are EXTREMLY UNSAFE, dirty and never on time. Don't wonder too much about Bucharest (capital city of Romania) airport. This is a very unpleasant place.
