The Land of Salt
by hadrian
Departing from Targu Mures on route E60, direction Sighisoara, at Balauseri you take left on road 13A and you will enter the Land of Salt. It is an area with huge reserves of salt, exploited by Romans starting with the 2nd century AD and continued until nowadays.
In less then an hour you reach Sovata, a resort with natural curative factors:
- chlorosodic mineral waters from the helium-thermal lake
- sapropelic mud from the lake
- fortifying bio-climate.
By their helium-thermal effect, the salty mineral waters from Ursu Lake made the resort to be well known ( the mineral waters from Sovata have been mentioned in documents dating from 1597 ) The salty waters get warm, having different temperatures at different depths (19-20 degrees centigrade on the surface, 30-40 at 1m depths, 40-60 at 1.5m depths). The salt content is 40 -250 g/l.
The climate is specific to a depression, with cool summers and cold winters.
There is not much to do in Sovata, regarding entertainment facilities, but it could turn to be a good destination for those who want to rest for two or three days, far away from the modern life.
