Turistichesky Komplex Solovki: Comfortable, but isolated, cottages

When our tour agency gave us the choice between two accommodations in Solovki, we chose the Turistichesky Komplex Solovki (Solovki Tourist Complex) mainly because of the price.

The tourist complex is a series of cottages in an isolated section of the island, making its main drawback the walking distance (1-1½ km) from the village. However, the rooms were very clean and well heated (an essential part of any trip around the 65th parallel!).

The staff was very friendly, even though it was obvious at times that they were poking fun at my poor Russian. Despite the occasional breakdowns in communication, the service was impeccable, especially at meal time -- in the main cottage (equipped with a big-screen TV), set Russian meals are served three times a day. The day's menu is shown on the wall inside the main cottage's lobby, allowing you to decide whether or not to eat there.

P. S. Don't confuse the Solovki Tourist Complex with the Solovki Hotel! When we asked for directions, even locals were thrown off, as some of them directed us to the hotel instead.
