In September/October 2004 I travelled the Transsiberian railroad to Vladivostok. Sometimes the trains stop in certain places 10-20 minutes and you can take a walk on the platform and buy a snack etc.
The industrial city of Chita was such a stop on the "Amur" train. I travelled on the Amur from Ulan Ude to Khabarovsk in Platzkartnii ie 3rd class.
