Christmas Eve

by Vasvari

Other than the Cathedrial of Christ the Savior what would be a good choice for midnight mass on Jan 6th? Maybe near Red Square??

Thanks.

Re: Christmas Eve

by bugulma

in my opinion Christmas is mostly religious holiday in Russia and not sure there will be a lot of people in Red Square. But for sure places will be crowded around Christ the Saviour and other churches.

Re: Christmas Eve

We arent looking for tourists, we are looking for a church service. The comment about Red Square is because our hotel is nearby. I would rather not have to walk to far at 1am on a January morning.

Re: Christmas Eve

the most crowd service is Christ the Saviour. I'm not much religious person but I guess in any church there is the christmas service...

Try the churches within the Kremlin.

Also, try Kazan Cathedral, it is at the edge of Red Square. It is small, therefore an early arrival would be best to get a standing spot, and you will stand, at this church anyway; there are not any pews/chairs. We popped in on a late-day service during the week on our first day in Moscow, May 2005.

there are no chairs in the orthodox churches. during the service you must be staying.
about Kremlin. Kremlin churches is museum territory mostly (though I read in newspapers that sometimes they do service in holidays) and besides there are government buildings. I don't know for sure but I have doubts that Kremlin will be open for the christmas service...

Traditionally church hollidays are very bright in Svyato-Danilov Monastery in Moscow (m. Tulskaya) and in Sergieva Lavra with is 50 km to the North from Moscow (you can get there by car or by train). I recommend this two places.

Travel Tips for Moscow

Moscow quite safe for ladies

by ROCKARIA

Just came back from Moscow & St Petersburg last week.It is quite safe in the main touristic areas during day, night times & even at 12.30am doing the metro or walking the main streets.
There are also police & security people around every block.
Ive seen girls walking alone or in groups & seemed pretty safe. One have to take the usual precautions as in every large city.

Cafemax

Good internet cafe operating 24 hours a day.
During the night the prices are cheaper than during the day, and if you are tired you can lean on your table and sleep until the metro is open. Some students so do after going to disco.
Metro station close by is Universitet. Address: Akademika Khokhlova 3.

A good landmark, but that's about it

by dlandt

This monument's purpose is unknown to me. It sure is ugly though. One thing that is nice about it is that you can see it from a long way away. At its base is the Art Museo area of Park Statue, which is a can't miss.

Vyisoko-Petrovskyi Cloister

by bugulma

The cloister is situated in Petrovka street. Firstly it mentioned in 1377. It's very impressive place. You can go inside and to walk in Cloister's territory, to visit rites or just to have a relax on the branches. Most of buildings are of XVI-XVIII centuries and reconstructed well after destroying in Soviet times. More information about cloister in my travelogue.

Changing times

by TheWanderingCamel

Military service is no longer to be compulsory in Russia. A new law will soon provide an option of civilian service for those who do not wish to bear arms. They will be able to take the option of spending the same amount of time (42 or 21 months, depending on the length of time spent in further education) in this service to their country.
Given the pride in their country and the loyal recognition and honour shown towards the heroes of The Great Patriotic War (as WW2 is called in Russia) one wonders what this young guard at the Eternal Flame and the veteran with all his medals will think of the change.
