Moscow Tip

The first thing which arrests our attention when we look at the Kremlin and which immediately arouses our admiration is its walls and towers. Their construction was supervised by the Italian master builders Anton Fryazin, Marco Ruffo (Fryazin), Antonio Gilardi, Pietro Antonio Solan, and Aloisio (Alevisio) di Carcano, specially invited for the purpose. There are 18 towers in the Kremlin wall. The Tainitskaya Tower (Tower of Secrets), the oldest one in the Kremlin, was built in 1485. As indicated by the name, the tower contained a secret well and a secret underground passage to the river bank. And the last to be built, the Tsarskaya (Czar's) Tower - a small tentlike turret built right on top of the wall between the Spasskaya (Saviour's) and Nabatnaya (Tocsin) Tower - acquired its present-day appearance in 1680. From here, according to tradi tion, the czar would watch important events taking place in Red Square.

Valentines weekend suggestions needed
by ratherton
I need a bit of help. I'm in Moscow for Valentines weekend and I've no idea what I can arrange for my girlfriend. Last year we had a meal and went to the Bolshoi which was really nice.
I was trying to find something a bit different for us that we wouldn't normally do. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The snowmobile stuff sounds good. I did some of that in Finland about 8 years ago and I'd love to do that again.
If you have any contact details for any companies, it would be appreciated.
Can't see the VT Meeting idea being appreciated too much :-))))

You may want to check with the Le Meridien Moscow Country Club. located in Nahabino. Quite nice and quiet place to stay. Perhaps they may have information regarding sleigh rides and winter activities @ and around the resort. They have a nice Athletic Club, with various Spas and so on. If you want to get away from it all. Restaurants nice, rooms not bad, and in general quite a nice get away from it all kind of place.
Visiting Russia...
by mkarim
We are 2 single guys in our 30s who like to see cultural and historical sights as well as good Western-style nightlife.
We are planning to visit SP in August for 9-10 days. What other places would you recommend (eg., Moscow, the Urals)? We want to see places but also want it to be a relaxing vacation.
Thanks.

I would say, for such a short stay in such a huge country, Moscow. Because it takes 30-40 hours by train to the Urals...
Re: Visiting Russia...

There are plenty of interesting sights closer to SPB. Novgorod, Pskov, Vyborg, and the monasteries at Valaam and Kizhi islands come to mind. But if you've never been to Moscow, you should really go there. There are frequent trains.
Re: Visiting Russia...

i think it would be interesting to visit:
- Petergof, Pavlovsk, Pushkin, Gatchina (suberbs of SPb)
- Velikiy Novgorod
As for nightlife - the best places to see it is SPb and Moscow

If you want to see the best of Russia go around Golden Ring. It's a chain of cities, superb cultural and siteseeing trip.
Re: Re: Visiting Russia...

Where is the Golden Ring, what cities does it have and how does one get there?
Re: Re: Visiting Russia...
by vaara
The Golden Ring is a group of historical cities east of Moscow, including Vladimir, Suzdal', Sergiev Posad, etc. They're all fascinating, but not exactly close to SPB... you'll probably have to pass through Moscow first.

Travel Tips for Moscow
Moscow Mayor's office
by Muscovite
Every other question about Moscow starts with safety concerns based on shadowy grounds
People in Russia are often literate and read 'Frommers, Fodors, and various other travel magazines', as a VT member had put it, but know better than to believe everything they write - this country, or any other, for that matter.
This is the official site of the Moscow Mayor's office - in English

Tverskoy bulvar
by bugulma
Tverskoy bulvar is the most famous of walking route streets of Moscow, I'm sure. It founded in 1796 in Ekaterina II times instead of old fortress walls. In the end of XIX century the street was very popular and in magazines there were articles which recommend to have a walk in the street for well brought-up people. The street (bulvar) is begun from Pushkin's monument and is finished with Timirjazev's monument in the opposite side. There is Esenin's monument in the middle of bulvar. There are many brenches and attractions for children. Several Moscow theatres are situated here. Thus, Tverskoy bulvar is still nice place to have a walk nowadays.
Step Back in Time

Kolomenskoe, an outdoor museum of wooden architecture located south-east of central Moscow, offers group leaders for schools and other large groups. The women (we only saw women leading) dress in period costume from the era of the Boyars ~ Medieval Russian Nobles.
Copies of your documents
by HORSCHECK
It is highly recommend to have copies of all your important travel documents, like passport, visa and registration. Just in case the originals get stolen or you lose them, the copies can be very helpful to get replacements from your embassy.
There are different opinions about what you should take with you during the day: the originals or the copies. In fact it is not an obligation to carry an ID in Russia, but on the other hand the police can stop you and ask for your documents.
Honestly speaking, as I wasn't interested in ending up in a Russian police station, I always took the originals with me. However, in 22 days in Russia I was never stopped by the police.
