or do I have to pay them in cash while I am in Moscow?
you defenatly have to pay in cash for taxi! Taxi drivers do not accept credit cards.
I know that the taxi company FORMULA TAXI accept the cards. Don't know about American Express but Visa for sure.
Try this but not many pages in English are available: http://formula-taxi.ru/en/order
Besides every airport has so named the official taxi and you pay in the special ticket office for taxi trip. Maybe there you may pay by card. In any way, yes, the cash is preferably for the taxi drivers, and ATM is everywhere around, so you may get a bit cash for taxi routes.
How are you going to find a taxi in the first place?
There aren't a lot of places in Moscow that take credit cards.... and taxis are definitely one of them that don't!
Not sure if you know, but "every" car in Russia is a Taxi! Stand out next to the street with your arm out a little, and a car will stop. Tell him where you want to go and you can negotiate a price. It is significantly cheaper then using an actual taxi service. I wouldn't recommend it to a single young female alone, although when I lived there I did it on a semi-regular basis. Granted, I was familiar with the city and I semi-spoke the language.
I speak the language - that's exactly why I prefer official services ;)

Exhibition of the achievements of national economy of the USSR
This former Exhibition of Economic Achievement was at one time a permanent World Expo of the great glories of Soviet--and particularly Stalinist--rule. It began in 1939 as the All-Union Agricultural Exposition, a celebration of the fruits of Stalinist progress, and many of its most grandiose elements date from that period. In ensuing decades the VDNKh was revived and eventually established on a permanent basis, becoming an exhibition of the finest achievments of the Soviet state. While the VDNKh is slowly restructuring itself to a less idealistic showroom for consumer goods from all over the world, it remains a truly outstanding place to visit, a kind of crazed Soviet visionary's wonderland. VDNKh encompasses a wide area and is filled with pavilions for everything from grain and furs to atomic energy. Many of these exhibition spaces still offer interesting and informative displays. However, what many find most fascinating is the overall dimension and vision of Soviet state imagination.
The district of the VDNKh metro station is another place to visit. It is almost as if you have walked into a Stalinist Disney World. Modern constructions stand peacefully side by side with remarkable monuments of the past. The indissoluble unity of the national economy is symbolized by the world-renowned sculpture of V. Mukhina, “The Worker and the Collective-Farm Women”. The 24-metre high figures, carrying hammers and sickles, portray the romance, enthusiasm and powerful impulse of the first Soviet five-year plans.
now it is one of the most popular places where people may walk and entertain. Almost all of the beautiful pavilions of VDNKh serve nowadays as the fair of low-guality goods of unknown origin.
Those soviet icons and paintings always attracted me, I find them extremely beautiful (apart from their political memory), and it would be a pity if they would be replaced nowadays by McDonalds or Sony advertisings!
But I guess is the sign of the times :-(
If you want to get the best rate for your money - bring cash! Nearly all exchange offices change USD or EUR. The following most acceptable currency is GBP, then CHF, JPY. There is lots of competition on changing money, so check the best rate from http://www.rbc.ru/cash/ (only in Russian) and head directly to the office to change - please note that the rates change constantly and sometimes I have not received the rate quoted few hours later – minimum sum to change may apply. The EUR has now in many places similar buy/sell spread than USD, so if you live in euro zone (or have cash in EUR) take EUR, not USD if you need to change in your own country as the buy/sell spread bigger in west than in Russia and usually a commission levied unlike in Russia. Unlike before I have not had show my passport (October 2004) to change money and you may not been given receipt if you do not specifically ask. Again bring only pristine condition banknotes and without any writing (which is common in GBP).
