Rack rate rip off - plan ahead or PAY !!!

I missed a connection , through no fault of my own, but had no redress as I was using two different carriers. So *I* had to pay !..

Imagine the scenario .. I am tired and a little fed up, then I take a room at the Airport ( Sheremetyevo ) Novotel ..

The rack rate price (Dec 2005) was $360 a night ( including breakfast)

This was my first introduction to Moscow "rip off" prices.... I have my own business, and *I* pay.. Now I will do ANYTHING to avoid having to stay in Moscow - especially Sheremetyevo.

If you can fly into Domodedovo - British Airways moved there - and the reasons are obvious.

Far better facilities and transport links to the centre - airport hotel prices still "steep" on rack rate but nearly 50% less and better links to centre.

Unique Quality: None... Just another Novotel - but one you feel you ought to be getting shares in.

Average Airport Hotel

Conveniently located a short distance from Sheremetyevo, this is a reasonably priced (for Moscow) hotel.

Check-in and check-out can be a bit slow and the coridoors and rooms are a little worn, but it is acceptable.

Breakfast buffet is extensive and tasty.

Moscow Airport Hotel

The hotel had a Don Pepe's mexican restaurant, Cote Jardin more traditional Russian meals and then the Cockpit Lobby Bar and Brannigan's night club. Most of the food was very good, but there are few choices on the menus. The night club is great except for fri.-mon. you will be one of maybe 3 or 4 people there. Tue.-Thu. it is pretty decent. The rooms are clean, but nothing special. Biggest issue here is there is only one computer in the hotel with internet access, which you must wait for as the flight crews come in and out, they generally take turns on it for hours. Service is good.

Unique Quality: Location is the key here, great for when you fly in with shuttles directly from the airport. However, the ride to Moscow is a bit lengthy, as you must walk across the road and pick up bus (218?) to Rechnoy Voksal (30 minutes) where you will take the subway (another 30 minutes) to downtown. Ulitsa Tverskaya (restaurants, bars, clubs), or Astantsia Teatralnaya (red square). The facilities were great but the indoor pool is small.
