Cheap Hostel

I rented a bed in the dorm but there are private rooms for rent. The bed dorm was 900 roubles (16 pounds) - I was busy when I arrived but went quite after one night so wasn't too cramped for me. I think a bed in a two person room is about 2600 roubles. Its a good location. They girls who work there are very friendly and speak English but do spend a lot of time smoking on the balcony so can be slow answering the door buzzer. Its good place to meet other travellers. The location is good, 30 minute walk to Kremlin or 5-10 minute Metro ride. Gorky Park is nearby, as is Sculptor Park (well worth a visit), Tretyakov's second gallery, the Red October Chocolate Factory, and not too far th Novidiechy Monastery/ Cemetery.

Unique Quality: It has a communal lounge with TV/DVD player, a small library, kitchen, fridge.

The breakfast isn't large but the bar where you eat it is interesting.

Take the metro to the station "Парк Культуры"(Park Kultury, brown line). Aim for the street "Зубовский бульвар" (Zubovskiy bulvar), turn to the left and go straight ahead till the crossing with "Зубовская улица" (Zubovskaya street) . Then cross two parallel roads and turn to the left to "улица Бурденко" (Burdenko street). Walk along the street and the second turn to the right (passed the restaurant and the building where Kandinsky lived) will be yours and the first building you will see is the hostel. The hostel has a small buzzer next to a metal door, press and be patient.

An Archatectural oddity

I've never actually been inside the Hotel. I hear that it has seen better days but the location is hardto beat, on Teverskya, a stones throw from Red Square, the Bolshoi, and Ohotny Riad Underground mall.

What interests me is the story of the reason why the facade on the two wings of the hotel are different. Story says that two drawings were brought to Stalin, each showing a different design. He signed both of them and since no one had the courage to question him, each wing is built with a different look.

Also notice the Baltica sign on top. Be sure to drink some Baltica beer. The Number 3 is everywhere and is a good lager but try the #9 it is excelent, very tasty. Watch out for the nearly 20% alcohol though.
