supermarkets in moscow and st petes

by lanerunner

we will be staying round the old arbat area in moscow and nevsky prospect in st petes ( i realise these are pretty big areas)

are there grocery stores centrally located?
i believe that the dostoevsky hotel in st petes for eg is housed on top of a shopping centre and i believe there is food sold there

we just want the usual- bread cheese milk fruit - if it is ok quality

anyone else actually shop in supermarkets

is it still the old system of lining up, ordering the items then going to pay the cashier before coming back to collect your purchases? or is that just in little towns>?

bread, cheese, milk and fruit are possible in the little shops too. there are not much centrally located supermarkets cause of big prices for rent. In Moscow in old arbat I can't remember smth... just remembered that 7th Continent is in the Ohotny Ryad mall, near of Kremlin only... :-)
i suppose this is the near by Old Arbat: http://www.7cont.ru/eng/clients/regions/default/stores/index.wbp?store=abf38297-232d-47c4-8af0-a6ef89b2f124
even in little towns of Russia I didn't see as you named it "old system" last time. you pay on the cash and get your shopping

thanks bugulma

didnt think about the high rents theyd have to pay
so i guess we wont be in for buying cheap food

will look out for ohotni ryad- thats hunters row - is it not?

thats good to hear that you dont have to queue up twice!

Go to Red Square-the Symbol of Moscow. There are always many people walking and making pics. On the one side of it you can find one of the biggest Moscow shopping centre-GUM. It's building goes back to 19th century and there you can find everything. You can also walk inside the Kremlin walls. There you will find different churches, Senate, Kremlin Palace and so on...Near the Kremlin walls you will see big Alexander Gardens, really nice place. You can spend your time on the grass or just walk, and you will find different cafes there.

Streets of Moscow

by Pablos_new

Streets of Moscow are traditionally very wide. Even in old town there is no any Old European style narrow lanes.

Many foreigners wonder when they see something like Leninsky prosp. with 5 car lanes in each direction.

Here is me and my car at one of embankments of Moscow.

Pobedy Park On the road to the airport you'll find the 'Victory Park', here you'll find a long avenue with garden and fountains, the Patriotic Big War Museum as the russian calls the IIWW, and in the middle of the avenue you'll see an obelisk dedicated to Nike (the Greek goddess of victory). At the start of that avenue ther's a big flowrs clock. It's a beautiful place for take a picture besides it's in use and it's very precise.

Changing of the guard

by HORSCHECK

The tomb of the unknown soldier which is located at the Kremlin Wall near the northern end of the Alexander Gardens is guarded by two soldiers from the presidential regiment.

The changing of the guard takes place every hour on the hour from 8.00 a.m. until 8.00 p.m (half hourly in winter).

This is almost so homely its artistic...in an attempt to limit car thefts this contraption somehow was the answer..lockable storage...LOL...underneath this is an equally interesting vehicle called a Moskvich..its engineering qualities and performance make a Yugo look credible...
