Easter in St Petersburg

by ShelbyKent

Hello! We'll be in St. Petersburg early April next year, on Easter Week in fact.

Will the museums, palaces and shops be all closed on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Black Saturday and Easter Sunday itself? (Please bear with me, I'm not sure if that's how they are referred to by Russian Orthodox.)

Are there any traditional festivals/events that we should see during this time?

Thanks in advance for your feedback! Cheers :)

Just noted your query in passing- the Holy Week-Easter Services are held on different dates by the Orthodox Church from the Western Church, they follow a different calculation, the West is the Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox, they follow a different calculation, check it for 2007... they sometmes coincide with the Western dates as does the Jewish Passover. In any case the tourist sights will be opened.

Travel Tips for Saint Petersburg

Watch the sunset at Neva. This...

by pinganille

Watch the sunset at Neva. This is so beautiful, one of the most colourful sunsets I've ever seen, maybe because of all the historical buildings around you:) Walking down the promenades at Volga, watching the sun going down and how it coloured all the old palaces, the river and the parks, and eating the delicious Russian ice cream.

Coal Power Plants

by Leipzig

Didn't know where to put this information so I decided to present it here.
It was a clear day when we arrived St. Petersburg but we noticed a kind of yellow blanket over the city. This reminded me on the time in the GDR. In winter we often had smog in town. And indeed, it was smog. The air smelled like sulfur. The reason for taht is surely the individual traffic and the power plants which are located in the city centre.

Fishing for Indigestion?

by sophiebeans

Here are some people fishing off a bridge over a canal right near Nevsky. If the locals don't even drink the water without boiling it first, I can't imagine eating fish that have been swimming in these waters!

Rimsky Korsakov and Mussorgsky's Graves

by mydreamquest

This is again the cemetery of the famous across the street from Hotel Moskva (Moscow) on the busy Neskiy Prospekt.

This picture is the grave of Nikolai Rimsky-Kosakov (right) and Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (left). Rimsky Korsakov is known for his symphonic suite "Schezarade" and Mussorgsky is famous for his dark, mysterious and powerful tone poem A Night on Bald Mountain (he also wrote operas).

If you look to the writing, you can recognize the birth year and final year of Korsakov's life. In Russian it is spelled: Pimcki-kopcakob (something like that). The R's are spelled with "P's" and S's spelled with "C's."

Malaya Sadovaya Ulitsa

by Canadienne

Located between Italianskaya Ulitsa and Nevsky Prospekt (the western end of the city centre, near Anichkov Most), Malaya Sadovaya is a newly pedestrianized (1999) street that is definitely worth seeking out for a break.

There are a few restaurants, a number of benches and small trees, as well as the pictured fountain (the granite ball rotates on the flowing water). . .it's a nice place to take a rest from Nevsky and indulge in some people-watching.
