Convenient is to fly and cheaper is the train.

Re: Transportation

Trains also can be convenient. It depends on the class you choose. But you should book them in advance in Summer, as even in August it is popular initiary.

Hi Edith!
As to me I prefer to use speed train (as TGV) from S. Petersburg to Moscow N 159A. It starts from Peter 16-00 and arrives to Moscow 21-30, only 5-30 hours. It’s convenient: if you take a flight you have to spend time to going to airport (30 min), registration, waiting departure (not less 1 hour), flying (1 hour), waiting baggage, going from airport to the Moscow (40 min). Cost is from 2486 Rubles to 3500 Rubles (from 80 USD to 113 USD). There are a lot night trains (you start from Peter about midnight and come to Moscow in the morning).
Have a good trip.

I agree, a train is less stress then flight as you do not need to get to the airport and out of it. Train is also comfortable as you can walk around and stretch better. However, you might also find yourself on a night train with noisy/snoring people as well as smelly which will make the trip as hell ;-)

Re: Transportation

in opposite to Oleg and others I prefer flights, so I choose the flight. for now it is possible with S7 Airlines to have ticket RUR 3040 to and back (EUR 70 around) and it lands in Domodedovo in Moscow the newest airport in the city with train connection to center of the city. Another advantage of the plane is you may buy ticket some months in advance of you flight versus 40 days for trains (for Russian railways). Although I must admit that my last circumstance is not significant because there are a lot of trains between cities and usually it is not a problem to buy ticket for the train.

It sounds strange, but trains are faster!!!
To get to the plane and come back to the city you can loose up to 4 hours from your life! Train (esp. overnight) will save you the whole day as it runs at night :))))))

I am 100% for train!

Aleksandro-Nevskaya Lavra, Troizky Cathedral

by bugulma

The central church of Lavra is Troizky Cathedrl. It was built in 1776-1790 by Starov. Until 1918 in the cathedral the relic of Alexander Nevsky was kept. Besides interior was beautified with paintings of Rubens, Van Deyk, Mengs and of other authors, so it looked like not Orthodox church interior indeed. All paintings were moved to Hermitage in 30ss of XX century.

Also remember it is usual to leave your coat in the garderobe before entering any museum.
