Visiting Saint Petersburg

by Gladyscecilia

Hello,
I would like to visit the Hermitage by myself, I mean without taking a tour. Are there any special days when it is open only for groups?
Thanks for your help.

The Hermitage is great to just wander. You can rent self-guided audio tours if you like, or just read a book about the collections ahead of time. There is too much to see ina day or two, pick your highlights!
We always go without tour.

Visit the Hermitage which houses some of the most beautiful paintings in the world Seeing all the gold they put into their buildings e.g. roofs of cathedrals and palaces have gold. Also as I walked through one street that was being dug up, I found that the whole city was built on sand.

Internet Clubs

by sennaya

Finding Internet access to check e-mail, send a fax, off-load pictures and so on is simple in St. Petersburg.
The two biggest clubs on Nevsky Prospect, Cafe MAx and Quo Vadiis can help with a wide variety of business services.

Costs are usually about $3 hour, 60-80 rubles an hour. Some less central clubs can be 50 rubles or $2 an hour.

Quo Vadis Nevsky Prospekt 76. http://www.quovadis.ru

Cafe Max Nevsky Prospekt 90/92, metro Mayakovskaya. 812-273-6655.
24 hours. http://www.cafemax.ru

Cafe Orange at Pik Center, Sennaya Metro has a nice Internet club for 80 rubles and hour and often live music in the evening. Free wi-fi is starting to spread
Free wi-fi on the 4th floor of the PIK center at Sennaya Ploschad
City Bar, see other tip, has free wi-fi

The Pulkovo I and II aiports are said to have free wi-fi Internet, but we did not try it yet.

This is the tomb of the famouse Russian Rock singer Victor Tsoi ('Kino'). He died in automobile accident in 1990. Now many of Russian singers (Zemfira, Mumii Troll, Checherina...) sing his songs.

It was his birthday at the end of June. There are always plenty of flowers and people on the Bogoslovskoje graveyard.

The real Russia?

by Jimmytravel

My girlfriend SOLA, her parents and myself visited family in Kolpina, half an hour outside St. Petersburg. It was quite different from what I've seen in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Not as modern, and most of the houses was from after the war.

World's smallest dog- Petersburg Orchid

by sennaya

Don't miss the smallest dog
The Petersburg Orchid is the world's smallest breed of dog. It might look more like a kitten at first glance in the owner's hand. Or a very large hamster. :)
But is is a real dog.
We have seen several in the center of Saint Petersburg.
In years past you usually saw large dogs in Saint Petersburg. Big strong working dogs. That fit the soviet ideal. But also it is very impractical to live with a big dog in a small urban apartment.
Now smaller dogs may be seen. And with luck, the world's smallest can be added to the sights you see in Saint Petersburg. :)
