    Very central location

    by

Six beds dormitory was clean and quiet.

We had an access to a kitchen and diningroom.

There was no police registration compulsory.

Nearby was a food market, also plenty of local self-service restaurants.

Unique Quality: Perfect location to discover downtown without using any public transport.

Directions: On Nevsky avenue, at the back of Kazan Cathedral

In order to apply for a tourist visa you need an hotel reservation for all the days of your stay OR an invitation letter from a Russian citizen. I know there are some internet sites where you can buy a valid invitation letter which will be shipped to an address of your choice. Unfortunately I don't have any link, I just heard this from other travellers.

This problem was why it took me almost 20 years till I took the train to Russia :)
Anyhow, these days it is a bit easier, if you have enough time in Helsinki before you go you can visit this office: www.viisumipalvelu.com
They arranged me a visa without invitation :)

A good guide can make your experience exceptional. We were very lucky to get SVetlana, whose command of English was extraordinary. She pointed out everything to us.

We later found out the Svetlana had been President Putin's translater when he was Mayor of St. Petersburg.

The Smolny Cathedral - another masterpiece of architechture.

It's funny that the Smolny School for Girls of Noble Origin located right near the Cathedral was selected by the bolsheviks as their headquarters during October 1917 revolution or coup d'etat whatewer you like.

Dancing Bears

by Leipzig

In Saint Petersburg you will probably see a performance by bears on roadside. The bears, hold on a short chain, are forced to dance for tourists in order to receive money as reward. I feel sorry for those bears and didn't watch the show and did not support the mistreating.

Ice Skating@ The Ice Palace

by Incubus30

Ice skating is very popualar in Russia and luckily I had a chance to try this sport even here.

The Ice Palace is an enormous Ice ring , normally used for Ice Hockey. It was built in 2000 and was a nice experience skating here. Hiring of shoes is available at this place

New Holland Island

by bugulma

Just near of Neva River Embankment, not far from Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge, there is New Holland Island. Island was settled in 1717-1720 when some channels were dug around. In Peter I times there was real shipyard in Dutch way, so that’s why the island has such name.
