The Hermitage at the Winter...

The Hermitage at the Winter Palace. Not an original choice I know, but it is dazzling. Millions of items in the museum's collection - art of such quality that it can seem like a surrealistic dream - and the palace interior, especially the Pavilion Hall. Staying in a grim Intourist dump out of town (this was Soviet era), it was a morning rush-hour trolleybus trip into the centre. Away from the guide for a while, I took out some toffee to while away the lurching ride, and passed the bag around. It may have gummed up some steel teeth but it broke the ice and was a rare chance to meet some locals, pass the photos down the aisle and and promise I'd come back.

The Alexander Column
The monument built as a facilitation of the victory over Napoleon.
When I saw this column the only question I had was how such a construction could stand without falling down. Very impressive.
Bad Luck
by cheekymarieh
Russians seem to be very superstious about small things. For example, if somebody stands on your toes, you must do the same back. It's considered bad luck if you don't.
Another superstition is that is bad luck to give an even number of flowers. If you give different types of flowers ,make sure there is an odd number of each type and also that they add up to an odd number.
Vodka Museum
by RB_Oakes
The Vodka Museum is just of Dekabristov Square and consists of two small rooms filled with various old vodka bottles, manuals on producing vodka, articles on the subject. It's all in Russian, so it was a bit of a quick tour for me, though. At the end of the museum is a vodka tasting bar. Entrance to the museum is 50 rubles and you get a shot of some rather rotgut stuff at the end (White Doctor). They have a lot of better vodkas in the tasting room so if you want to stay a while and get serious about your vodka studies, you may.
Protest Art in the river
by sennaya
The rivers and canals are the lifeblood of St. Petersburg, even in winter.
Some artists state their point of view on the snow on the Fontanka River near Nevsky Prospekt. "Artists against art!"
