Travel Tips for Saint Petersburg

The first thursday of the month

by Mique

At the first thursday of the month the Hermitage is for free. It was very crowded when i was there at this first thursday of the month but mostly it were tour groups so i seriously doubt that it will be less crowded in high season if you pay the normal entrence fee. Which is 200 rubbles at the moment (2005) which is not ridiculously high. The only thing i wished i had done was to be a bit more prepared in advance so i would know exactly what i wanted to see. Now we just got lost every time since we just turned at every thing that we found interesting looking. Which was a lot of fun, but also made us miss out on some seriously interesting stuff.

Visit the churches and cathedrals. For a country that had religion outlawed for decades, the Russian Orthodox churches are plentiful and beautiful. They were quite run down when I visited but hopefully have been restored since.

Do you speak russian?

by siwi

I started to learn russian in SPB. I was by LIDEN & DENZ , a private school where foreigners may learn russian! It was fantastic from the human point of view because I met a lot of great people. Some are friends now... My teacher Irina was patient and very friendly and I learned a lot with her! And the russian language is terrible but fascinating!!!!

Packing List

by K1W1

Hiking Don't be too concerned if you haven't brought enough film with you as a roll of Fuji, 36exp, will cost you about 60 roubles (USD 2.00 in real money). C.D.'s are the bargain of the century here - just 60 roubles for a good quality disc. You'll really struggle though if you want to buy only legit cds as the shops are very few and hard to find.

St.Petersberg has been...

by kayekaye

St.Petersberg has been protected from the ravages of high-rises and intrusive modern development by tough planning laws and so retains the grandeur and style of Imperial high living. Built on marsh and swamp, the canals are a necessity more than a deliberate attempt to re-create Venice but repay a walk at dusk through the maze of waterways fronted by the former palaces of the nobility -and Imperial Mistresses. Mathilda Tchessinskaya, ballerina and lover of Nicholas II, once owned a beauty. It became a Pioneer Palace and I spent an afternoon inside with the arrayed Komsomol assembled to give us the correct impression of Soviet youth. Plans went happily awry when two of the girls suggested I deliberately miss the bus back, and for 2 precious hours we stole through the alleys and courtyards arm in arm.
