Join one of Peters walking tours. For USD8.00, you will be led around the city and given a very informative and interesting tour for about four hours. The tours are always different as the guides try to vary them so it's possible to do more than one. The tours start at the St. Petersberg international hostel around 10.30 every day. There are sometimes night tours where the local information on the 'in' night spots can come in very handy. One of my favorite memories is a day trip out to Pushkin and Pavlovsk. Catherines Palace at Pushkin and the grounds at both Pushkin and Pavlovsk are very impressive.
Baltik Beer
by Leipzig
Over the past years beer has become quite popular in Russia. It seems "Baltik Beers" is the most popular brand in the region around St. Petersburg. I saw advertisement of this brand everywhere.
The beer has a pleasant malt taste and is very refreshing.
Cheers!
Tavrichesky Palace
by bugulma
On Shpalernaya Street you can see Tavrichesky Palace, the residence of the favorite of Ekaterina II the Great, Grigory Potemkin-Tavrichesky. It was built in 1783-1789 by Stasov. During Pavel I times it was destroyed and even rider-school was here. In the beginning of XIX century the palace was reconstructed and the theatre was situated inside. In the beginning of XX century the parliament was placed in the building.
Now THIS is a bookstore!
by tiganeasca
Not so far off the beaten path, I guess, because it is located smack in the heart of the Nevsky Prospekt, is Dom Knigi--the House of Books. This multi-level bookstore is in the Singer Building, a turn-of-the-century factory for the Singer Sewing Machine Company! Its art-nouveau aspects (and especially its corner decoration) make it quite impressive. But go inside an feast your eyes and pocketbook on this wonderful bookstore. Art books, especially, tend to be of high quality and less expensive than in the West. There is even a small foreign-language section. You may be amazed, as I was, at the number of people in bookstores generally. Reading is a popular pastime in Russia and I never visited a bookstore that wasn't crowded.
The store is located at Nevsky Prospekt 28. It is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.
