Playgrounds and parks in Saint Petersburg?

by Kay_Denmark

I will be visiting Saint Petersburg at Easter with my four-year-old daughter. She needs a place to blow off steam now and again. Are there any parks or playgrounds in the area of Bolshaja Morskaja, where we will be staying? Or any parks elsewhere in the city easily accessible by metro? Thank you.

I stayed there years ago as a student and, although we didn't have time to go to parks, I remember that we went to the beach once. There were some merry-go-rounds, swings etc. nearby. I can't remember where it was but the local people are bound to know.

You can visit Alexander Park - in 10-15 minutes walk from B.Morskaya. Go along Nevsky Prospect to Palace Square and then cross Admiralty Prospect and you are in Alexander Park. The direction is to Admiralty Steeple with weatherwind in a ship form (the symbol of the city).
Another park is in 15-10 minutes walk - it's Michailovsky Park near Russian Museum. Go from b.Morskaya to Nevsky then turn right and go to the Clock Tower and Gostiny Dvor department store and then turn left via pedestrian subway anf go to Russian Museum (Michailovsky Palace). Park is beyond the palace.

Hi Kay,
it was a big swing set in the park between St.Isaac Cathedral and the Peter's I
monument, by the embankment and Admiralty.
It is very good to play in the Summer garden too. It is 30 min walk with child from your place by the Hermitage along the Millionnaya street, Mars field and Summer garden entrance from the embankment side.
Enjoy your walks!

Travel Tips for Saint Petersburg

by Canadienne

I recall reading somewhere that St. Petersburg has almost as many bridges as there as days in the year. . .it certainly seems that with each turn in a street (or in a canal, once you are boat-bound), you encounter a new one. The effect all of these bridges on us was striking and it is a unique memory of the city ~ many of the bridges are decorated and touring them, by foot or by boat, is an event in itself.

Make a wish...

by mayafly

The 'Griffin Bridge' (Bankovskiy Most)
The 'Griffin Bridge' spans Kanal Griboedova just west of Nevskii Prospekt, in front of the Economics Department of Herzen University (located in the former Assignment Bank, a large yellow building). Some people believe that you can make a wish on the Griffin Bridge. Place a hand on the griffin's paw (or wing, some people say), make your wish, and cross the bridge. Maybe it's only folklore, but every wish I've made has come true...happy wishing!

Count your flowers

by bobs12

If you're giving flowers to a Russian for whatever reason, be it a romantic gesture, a birthday or a thank-you gift, be sure to count them first.

Don't give an even number of flowers - even numbers are reserved for funerals and gravesides. It's another 'bad omen', and believe me, you will be held accountable if someone so much as sneezes after you give the wrong number of flowers...

If you want to send flowers to St. Petersburg, Edward Thompson runs an excellent mail-order flower delivery service! (And he lives just down the road from me :)

Finding a fitness Club

by sennaya

Sports exercise clubs are fairly popular in the city, especially inteh winter wqhen it is forsty and uninviting outside.

Planeta Fitness has been around 10 years and has 12 clubs in St. Petersburg.
We found the one on Kazanskaya friendly to english speaking foreigners and well equipped with machines and classes all day. Exercise clothes

A little piece of Dutch legasly

by Pavlik_NL

Saint Petersburg was built with a lot of help of the Dutch. Not so much the buildings, but other structures that had connection with their nautical experiences and waterwork technologies. Bridges and harbourterrains, built by Russians, taught by the Dutch. A leftover from this - which used to be directly at the waterfront of the Finnish Gulf - is the triangle shaped "island" Novaja Gollandija (= new Holland). Here were the shipwharfs, where the first proud Russian navy was built to eventually defeat the Swedes on the East Sea (Baltic Sea). Now it's a sadly forgotten piece, though I have heared that this year (2003) - as for the celebrations of the 300th anniversary of Saint Petersburg, this area has been renovated and is now part of the great heritage that this second Russian capitol already had. From Holland (sorry, can't make it to the party, but hope and expect it will be just great):
