The Hermitage at the Winter... by kayekaye
The Hermitage at the Winter Palace. Not an original choice I know, but it is dazzling. Millions of items in the museum's collection - art of such quality that it can seem like a surrealistic dream - and the palace interior, especially the Pavilion Hall.Staying in a grim Intourist dump out of town (this was Soviet era), it was a morning rush-hour trolleybus trip into the centre. Away from the guide for a while, I took out some toffee to while away the lurching ride, and passed the bag around. It may have gummed up some steel teeth but it broke the ice and was a rare chance to meet some locals, pass the photos down the aisle and and promise I'd come back.
