Nevsky Prospekt - the Nevsky Avenue
by eksvist
Nevsky Prospekt is the main street in the city of St Petersburg.
Planned by Peter the Great as beginning the road to Novgorod and Moscow, the avenue runs from the Admiralty to the Moscow Railway Station and, after making a turn at Vosstaniya Square, to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
The chief sights include the Rastrelliesque Stroganov Palace, the huge neoclassical Kazan Cathedral, the Art Nouveau Bookhouse (Dom Knigi), half a dozen 18th-century churches, a monument to Catherine the Great, an enormous 18th-century shopping mall, a mid-19th-century department store, Grand Hotel Europe, the Russian National Library, and the Anichkov Bridge with its horse statues.
The Nevsky today functions as the main thoroughfare in Saint Petersburg. The majority of the city's shopping and nightlife, as well as the most expensive apartments, are located on or right off of the Nevsky Prospekt.
The Prospekt has five Metro stations along its length, with each having its own unique identity.

300th Anniversary Celebrations
by Canadienne
Although official celebrations were held from May 24 through June 1, a week or two after our visit, there were still a number of events going on as a lead-in to the festivities.
On our second-to-last day in the city, we witnessed the beginning of this procession from the Grand Hotel Europe to the square to the east of the Church on Spilled Blood. There were horses and carriages, men and women in period costumes. . .and music to greet them next to the church. It was a private entry event (the section near the church was cordoned off), but the parade was open for viewing.

excellent location. from there you can walk to most tourist attraction - like the Russian museum, and also to all the famous churches like Kazan Cathedral, and also to Church of Spilled Blood - nearby also excellent market to buy souvenier.
You will enjoy your stay there - loved the cakes there also - and they have an excellent buffet spread.

Arguably, the Grand Hotel Europe is the finest hotel in Sankt Peterburg. I have stayed there many times. Heretofore it has always been a Kempinski property. However, I believe recently it has been acquired by the Mandarin Hotel Group. Supposedly, it will undergo extensive renovation and presumably be even nicer. The location is superb. Walking distance to the Russian Museum, Hermitage, and shopping on the Nevesky Prspkt.

Hello, Asim! Your baby is really very beautiful!
Location of your hotel is the best!
I live in St.Petersburg and it would be interesting to have a little VT meeting. Time after 19.00 will be right for me (I finish my work at 18). We can go for a walk and I can show you some tourist attractions - it becomes dark only after 22.00 - white nights approach. But sorry, my English is not so good.
How about evening on 11th or 12th?

I really appreciate that :) Natalya it seems to be a good idea, what I will do is that I will confirm my plan in a couple of days time and then I will update it over here in that way we will confirm the date and time for the meeting :)
Cheers,
Asim

I stayed at the Europa awhile last summer. It is an incredible nice hotel and ranks with the best in all of Europe. It rivals most museums for interior excellence.
Go to my St Petersburg(hotels) page...there is a review and many pictures.
Astoria or the Grand Europe

We will be in ST. Petersburg late May for four days. Would you prefer the Astoria or the Grand Europe. Thanks Jan

Both hotels are very elegant and historic but the Grand Hotel Europe is just a bit higher on the elegance, service, dining and price. You can not go wrong with either, both are in perfect locations. I should be recommendeding the Astoria after last weeks winter fantasy party I attended that they hosted on Stone Island but in fairness both hotels deserve the rave reviews they get. All other hotels in North Western Russia are less impressive. Which one you would like depends on what you are looking for. If you have some specific criteria please let us know because it could effect the recommendation. Late May is a time of White Nights and no one is in a room most of the night anyway, with festivities lasting until 5-6am most nights so a wonderful hotel might be wasted during that time.

It happens so that some years ago I have spent 1 night in Grand Europe and 1 night in Angleter (that is now part of Astoria). Grand Europe is a highest class with no doubt.
Angleter occupies separate building next to Astoria and has only common restaurant facilities (breakfest as well) with it. That time (about 6-7 years ago) last level of Angleter was occupied by some night club and if one did not fall asleep by 1 a.m. it was impossible to do it for next 2 hours ;( I could not say it exactly about main building of Astoria, but as those old buildings are very tight to each other this also could be a problem.

"Astoria" is closer to Mariinsky (10 minutes walk) then "Europe" (30-35 minutes walk or public transport). "Europe" is closer to Russian museum and the Cathedral of Saviour on Blood. "Bronse Hoseman" and Isaak Cathedral are closer to "Astoria". Both hotels are located in the very center.
