A night and a Day with my Princess
by chuddy1999
Returned back to Pieter after spending weekend out at Pskov and Puskin etc. Unfortunately missed the train back to Petrozavodsk. Did not fancy the idea of trying to get some accomodation. So we decided to walk around the city for several hours till the next train. But first a meal in a 24 hour cafe, wonderful food, we killed an hour or two just chatting, laughing , joking. Then Midnight came and it was my birthday. Walking down the streets of Pieter hand in hand, all the people around us, the buildings going past. Window shopping, Then on to the Rock and Roll club where we spent several hours, dancing, drinking, chatting. Afterwards onto the train station Ladoshskaya to catch the train. We met a friend who was going out to Germany before we boarded our train Home. Travelled 1st Class because we needed the rest LOL, although we could not afford the bed linen LOL but at 100 pyb no chance. Hell i miss everything about this city, it has so much there it is hard to single anything out, the shops, the food, the customs, the art work, the buildings, the way of life. The sheer zest of the city even at ungodly hours of the morning.
The Alexander Column
by Klod5
This towering triumphal column was erected in 1833 as a somewhat belated monument to the defeat of Napoleon in 1812. Designed by Auguste de Montferrand, who also designed St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Alexander Column was hewn from the rock face of a cliff in Karelia over a period of two years, requiring the labors of thousands of workers. It was then carefully transported to St. Petersburg, taking an entire year for to complete the transit. On arrival, the monolith was erected by two thousand veterans of the war. It is surmounted by an angel of peace, the visage of which bears considerable similarity to Alexander himself. In keeping with the geometric formality of the Imperial structures of the city, the Alexander column is positioned so as to align perfectly with the entrance to the Winter Palace and the triumphal arch that serves as the entry to the General Staff building opposite.

Russians are proud of their literature. Try to read, for example, Pushkin's poems. You can visit Pushkin's home museum (Moika's Enbankment 12). This statue is near the State Russian Museum.
You can learn much about St.Petersburg from Puskin's novel 'Jevgeny Onegin' and 'Bronze Horseman'.

Probably the one of the best things a person could do is get invited to a Russian family's home. Seeing the Russian people on the street you would think they are cold, and not friendly at all. Nothing is further from the truth! I was fortunate enough several times to be invited for dinner, and it was an experience I will never forget. I think, on a whole compared to westerners, they are much more family oriented, and have very strong families. Just remember when you enter their home to take your shoes off, you'll be given slippers. Also, making a toast before drinking is a very big custom there as well. I think the Russian people had a reason for a toast for everything. I really was one of the highlights of my trip there.
Well.....I'm not so sure this would be qualified as 'Off the beaten path', and really this is for the guys who might visit this site, but I have to say that in my limited knowledge, that Russian women are some of the most beautiful women in the world. A person can just sit down at a cafe on Nevsky Prospect, and in 10 minutes see more beautiful women than you can possibly dream of! I got the impression that a Russian woman's appearance is very improtant to her. I mean a 5 minute walk to the grocery means the women there will dress to the nines, and just look beautiful! I guess this is why I have a Russian girlfriend....and she is beautiful in everyway! It's a very different type of lady and a great reason to travel to St Petersburg.
