Hermitage
It's impossible to get in to see the museum on your own. You need to find a tour to take you through. As it is, they rush you through as fast as possible. The Impressionist collection of art is breathtaking.

Hi,
Could anyone tell me how to get to Murmansk from St Petersburg? I guess by air? If so, do you know where I can find the schedule and where to buy the ticket?
From what I read, Murmansk is the largest city in the Arctic Circle. That's the main reason why I'm thinking of going there.
Many thanks in advance for your advice.
Many thanks indeed for your advice on alternative routes and stops. That's very helpful. Just in case my time doesn't allow me to take the train, do you happen to know the flight schedule and where I can book the tickets?
Many thanks again for the detailed advice. Sorry I missed the wikipedia link on airlines that you mentioned earlier. You've been very helpful.
You mean the photos on the photo.net site? Many thanks and very glad to know someone looks at them :)
But travel photos are different from artistic photos. Do I want to wait for a couple of hours for the magic light or rather to see more of the touristy sites? I'll have to keep a good balance. Wish me luck. Maybe I'll catch the Arctic light in Murmansk?
Hi, try this link in English http://www.skyscanner.ru/flights-to/mmk/cheap-flights-to-murmansk-airport.html?gclid=CJ-JguXNg6ICFU0L3godu28vEg
The return price from Saint Petersburg to Murmansk is about 205 euro (for August 2010). Good luck!

Go to the Palace Square, the place where the October Revolution took place. On the 7th of November, 1917, revolutionary sailors captured an Emperor's Winter Palace, that gives a name to the Square. Square is large and beautiful in sunny weather.
In most Russian museums, palaces and cathedrals, you can take pictures or make videotapes, but you have to pay an additional fee when you get your ticket. If you take pictures without the permit, you might get a fine. Pay the extra fee - it's worth it!
Some foods are difficult to find.
Yellow Mustard: If you like yellow American mustard, bring your own. Heinz has their Ketchup in Russia, but not yellow mustard yet.
Maple Syrup: for 500 rubles ($20)you can find grade B from Canada at the Okei store.
Peanut butter: Not popular, but small jars next to the almond or filbert butter can be found for a price.
Chestnut: you can find a small jar but it is expansive and not so tasty as you can bring with you:)
One of the secret places is in the central park for relaxation on Yelagin Island.
You can rent a catamaran (paddleboat) or row boat and see monkey island.
Three apes, from the baboon family, wait to see you go by.
You are not allowed to go on the island, butr you can take photographs. Many people throw them bread.
It costs about 200 rubles an hour plus a deposit that is returned.
You can navigate several canals and lakes in the island in addition to passing the apes :)
