Train or bus from Riga to St. Petersburg

by Tavso9

Hey everyone,

I'd like to travel from Riga to St. Petersburg (and back) but haven't decided yet whether to take the bus or the train.
Does anone know how much both are?
Is it safer to take the bus or the train?
Is the bus much less comfortable?
Do I have to get a ticket for either a day in advance or can I get a ticket the morning I leave Riga?

Thanks a lot for your help,

Tatjana

Definitely, the train is more convenient - even sitting places, though it goes at night - like the only bus in this direction.
Insurance of your camera is probably not worth spending - as to get a sign from local police proving the stealing will be another torture and time waisting...

Hey,

thanks for your answer.
Do you think traveling by train is safe enough for a single woman?

Thanks a lot

I once took the train from StP to Riga and travelled in kupe (4 person compartment) and I shared with a nice couple from Norilsk but the man really stank of alhohol. The train also has the cheaper "Platzkartni" carriages.
Another time I took the day bus from Riga to Pskov but this bus actually went to StP. At the time there were two companies do the run, I think I took ecolines and there was eurolines for the night run. I bought the ticket the day before and my bus was almost empty. I guess it depends whether school holidays or other public holidays are on or not.

Travel Tips for Saint Petersburg

Take your time and stroll done...

by mshuey

Take your time and stroll done Nevsky Prospekt. Sit and observe people. Soak it all in. You're in St. Petersburg! It's really a beautiful place. Buy some flowers and give them to someone you don't know. Do something different!! I loved all the sites in and around St. Petersburg... but my fondest memories are sitting in my friend's flat late into the evening talking and drinking hot cups of tea. Remember, things don't make the trip special... people do!

Saint Petersburg Tip

Just strolling around the streets in St.Petes in the sun with an ice cream. You never knew what you'd find around the corner. The buildings are in need of maintenance and are falling to pieces, but the character and atmosphere of the place is genuine - get there before it turns into just another Western commercialised city.
This is the Smolney Cathedral.

The People's Car

by Canadienne

According to our driver (for a city tour on our first day), Lada means “lovely darling" and at least 10 million Russians own one. It is Russia's most beloved (and maligned) car, and has been for over thirty years. It’s as identifiable a part of the culture as the fur hats or vodka.

Not the prettiest of vehicles, the car is the subject of jokes and insults ~ but it holds its own on the brutal Russian roads. There’s even an SUV Lada that has a bit of a cult following overseas (in my own country, among others). . .

Southern coast of the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Finland

Peterhof and area. Indeed Peterhof's best season is summer, the fountains are in service and it is beautiful, but even in winter you can appericate the scenes the area offers.
The Cathbedral at Peterhof is very large. Much bigger than you woul;d expect for being well out on the coast line of the Gulf of Finland, but then again, it probably was where the "court" attended services, so it's statement is "configured" accordingly!

If you'll visit St. Petersburg...

by Marusya

If you'll visit St. Petersburg you'll never forget it.
I have to say that it's not dangerous to walk alone at nights, but you should be cariful. Most of the people though are very nice, and they're welcome tourists like no one else. You might meet some great people, and most of them are studying English :)
