Saint Petesburg in december

by Lorenzo&Maja

Hi everbody.

With my girlfriend we were thinking to go to Saint Peterburg during the first week of december as we were tinking that during the winter it must be very charming there: cold, but nice light, above all a lot of snow, winter atmospehere, romantic city, decorations for christmas and so on....

A friend of us told us that actually there will be a lot of humility... and so I guess a lot of rain???? For sure we would like to see also museums and also go to clubs in the night, but during the day....we were thinking to have romantic walks in the snow with nice light.....yes, we wuld like also some sun :) :)

So how long there is day in december? From which hour to what hour? You really dont advice us to go?
What about christmas decoration? my girlfriends likes towns with a lot of colours and night with a very traditinal christams atmosphere

December has some benefits. Accommodation and any personal services should be cheaper up until about Dec 25 when the holiday season starts. You should understand that The Russian Orthodox Christmas is January 7, not December 25. New Years is our largest holiday of the year and takes many of the traditions of both Christmas and New Years from other cultures such as gift giving, Santa Clause, etc.

The day is short in December. The sun comes out around 10:00 in the morning and goes down around 4 p.m. St. Petersburg is beautiful at night though. The weather is of course unpredictable. It could be quite pleasant, or it there could be a snow storm.

Every year, the City government seems to try to outdo itself from the year before on city decorations. The economy is doing much better now, so I guess there is plenty of money for this. They do a good job decorating the city and your girlfriend will enjoy the atmosphere. There is always a fireworks show at midnight on New Years from Palace Square that the whole city seems to come out for.

Hope it helps

Luggage, extra cost

by Nuclei

SPB or in general in Russia luggages are an issue. If you have a luggage with you, you pay an extra ticket in the bus or metro. Even some hotels charge you hourly fees for the time you left your luggage in store room of the hotel.

Beautiful Russian Girls

by sophiebeans

This is my friend Val, along with Katya and Natalia. Aren't they cute! One real eye-opener for me when I visited Russia is that the women are very appearance-oriented. You will often see them dressed up, walking around in high-heels and never without make-up or their hair done! Growing up during the cold war, I was always lead to believe that Russian women were big and hulking, whose only accessory was a scarf tied tightly around their faces! At least that's how they were portrayed in the media. Quite the contrary, as you can see!

Included in our complimentary tour was a visit to St. Petersburg's synagogue, the only one in the city.

Due to harsh religious restrictions there was only a small population of Jewish residents until the later 19th century. Czar Alexander II permitted construction of a synagogue in 1873 although construction didn't start until 1880 with completion in 1893. During WWII, luckily the St. Petersburg jewish community was spared the Nazi genocide. But even today the Jewish population remains small at 8-10,000.

The style is Moorish-Islamic in design and it appeared to be freshly painted.

Location: Lermonovsky Prospect 2

Krestovsky Ostrov

by sennaya

Krestovsky Ostrov is one island reserved mostly for nature.
About 500 meters from Metro Krestovsky Ostrov and you are in nature.

You also can find the theme park Divo Ostrov,
Kirov Stadium,
The Dolphinarium, russkaya Rybalka restaurant, a petting zoo
and just north Yelagin Island, also full of nature walks.
