Pushkarskaya Sloboda Hotel - Suzda'l: Country comforts

by TheWanderingCamel

Our Golden Ring tour was all pre-booked with everything done by the tour company so we didn't know what our hotels would be like except that we hoped they would be pretty nice - we'd certainly paid enough! but having left Moscow early in the morning and having a really full day our main criteria was a good night's sleep in a comfortable bed. Suzda'l's Sloboda Hotel did us proud.

The hotel is actually a large complex set in an extensive park with several accommodation options in a variety of buildings that includes a restored 19th century stone country house, some new buildings in a similar style and a collection of rustic wooden houses. The wooden cabins are apparently furnished as traditional country cottages and can sleep 2 families. We were given large, airy rooms in the main building, a twin and a double, each with an en suite bathroom. Everything was very clean, fresh and (after I'd asked for a change from a room directly opposite the rather noisy bar that was housed in a seperate building) country quiet - just what we were looking for.

A friendly, helpful, English-speaking receptionist and free internet in the lobby (just one computer but we were the people interested in using it that night) added to the good vibes, and a couple of post-dinner Russian brandies in the bar rounded the evening off nicely.

Dinner was included in our night. Served in one of the on-site restaurants (this one decorated with a military theme) it was something of a mixture. The mushroom ragout we began with was absolutely delicious, as was the gratin of golden, bubbly, cheesy caulifower that followed. I'm not sure what they called what came next but now we know what the Russian Army does with their worn-out boots. The finishing touch of pancakes served with an autumn berry compote and thick cream was as delicious as the mushrooms we'd started with. This set the pattern for nearly all the meals we ate on this tour - the soups, vegetables and desserts were always great - carnivores, take note!

I can't remember breakfast though I'm sure I must have eaten it.

Everywhere: International calls

by whiteritter

I'm not sure about magicjack. My voip program preinstalled at my laptop in the west did'nt work when i came to russia.i would suggest do not think too much about your magicjack in russia, but if you have skype account preinstalled, you can use that laptop in russia and make all calls.
i reckon you can discuss any details of internet access when you will call your hotel to book your room.
P.S. My opinion is better to use international calls with skype. cheers!

Home from Home: Moscow great location hostel

by melosh

Probably too shabby for your average tourist, but the location is fabulous. The staff are friendly, the shower water hot and the internet functional. The beds and sheets and spaces were clean.

The spaces whether dormitory, showers, kitchen etc. are small.

The place could also use a good paint job.

The location is enough to make me certain to return upon my next visit to Moscow.

It also explains how I could be "very satisfied" in a place where the value and amenities are poor compared to most hostels I have experienced in the world.

It is near the Smolenskaya Metro station.

For me, compared to an expensive Russian hotel, this was actually a great experience.

Hostels: Finding a hostel

by melosh

The high cost of hotels in Russia makes finding a hostel or private home (DOM) important for the lone cheap traveler. If you do not speak Russian, the private home option seems rather forbidding. Also their locations are not obvious.

Although I had the Lonely Planet published the year of my travel (2009) 3 or the 5 hostels I searched for were not functional. One in St Petersburg I found the old sign but no hostel. In V. Norgorod I am sure I had the right address but the building was being used for a different purpose and when I "asked" the people had no idea of a hostel/hotel nearby. In Suzdal the address and location on the map did not agree, still I found the place but it was closed for major repair.

The other part of the challenge is the poor signage and somewhat obscure locations. Good directions are very helpful.

The major advantage is the low cost compared to even the cheapest hotels. At the two hostels I did stay at the computer access was good, kitchen use was available and English spoken.

A youngish Russian friend said he did not know that such cheap accommodation existed in Moscow at such a good location. (The Home from Home is just off Arbat street across from where there is a Hard Rock Cafe.)

CubaHostel: St. Petersburg great location hostel

by melosh

Adequate facilities and amenities but a bit shabby and cramped compared to other European, Chinese or South American hostals. Clean enough. The friendly staff speaks English and were helpful.

The staff did mention that they do provide "letters of invitation" as needed for the visa application process.

Location, location, location. It just does not get better than this.

Astor Apartments: Your flat in Moscow

by Kars

This was another fair participation as usual... Instead of hotel's money-smell atmospfere , we simply wanted to stay in a place where we would feel like at our home... We were 4 friends and had enough rooms there, for us.

Thanks to Dimitri and his partner Timur

Best will be to be hosted by local people as Hotels seems to be very expensive for tourists, and so I was lucky to know good friends, and we stayed in an apartment hostel, it was excellent and great deal.

teacher refresher courses hotel: cheap place to stay

by babbeeface

This is the place I usually stay at when I am in Moscow.it's meant for teachers only but they take everybody provided they have vacant rooms. I never book it, just arrive there and check in. Moscow (and Russia in general) is notorious for having the most expensive accomodation, so if you want to save some money, stay there, it was 500 rubles a night with breakfast in 2006. they have double and triple rooms with a shared bathroom(for each 2 rooms).Decent.
