Huge Russian Type Hotel
To be honest, it was not so difficult for me to decide where to stay. Since I live in Ankara, Turkey; it was natural to stay in Angara Hotel. I stayed at Russian type hotel in Baku, Azerbaijan before and I have no good memories. However, Angara Hotel was much better than I expected. Clean and comfortable, good location, reasonable pricing, English speaking stuff.
Unique Quality: It is located in the city center, close to Angara river. Not far from away from train station.
The room quality (and rates) go higher once you go for upper floors. Since hotel is very big (my room was at the end of the aisle and it was 108 steps from the elevators - I am 190 cm tall) every floor has a special attendant. Receptionists do not like you ask them anything and they do not reply and ask you to contact your floor attendant. There is a nice bar/restaurant at the ground floor, namely London. Wi Fi is available. Payment with credit card possible. Since most taxis would like to go to further distances (airport), it is difficult to find a taxi to go to train station, be early.

Expensive?
We stayed there couse it was part of arrangement but think it's too expensive for Siberia.
Very soviet style inside&outside. Staff not so friendly. Breakfast ok, but too crowded.
Big + are stamps.

standard Russian hotel, dead centre of town
This is a bog standard Russian 3-star hotel. There isn't anything wrong with it, but not a lot good about it. Its best feature is that it is located in the dead centre of Irkutsk, right across from Kirov Square. Rooms were OK and the en-suite bathrooms clean enough and complete. We didn't get a chance to try out any of the restaurants or bars because of all the extremely loud hideous music or kareoke blaring out form them, again, standard for Russia.
If I were to end up in Irkutsk again, I would probably stay here again. I don't think any of the other hotels would be much better.

Big Hotel, useful lobby facilities
I never stayed here but if you want various facilities or advice this a good place to come. For example, i used the cafe phone to call my friends... when I was there (in 2003) it was the Intourist hotel... nearby there was a little French cafe, a good place to drink coffee slowly and admire the scenery, the hotel bar was rather dark and dingy... generally the Hotel lacks soul.....

Place to get your visa stamped
I never actually stayed at the Angara, staying in private accommodation, which turned out to be a lot cheaper. The Angara, did however, register us as having stayed there, for a fee of 150 roubles per passport.
This was good as it turned out, as the immigration officer in Vladivostok questioned why we had a gap of six days between registrations. We showed our train tickets to her, which answered her question perfectly. We may have had some problems had there been a 10 or more day gap between registrations.

Angara hotel: English spoken and visa registration
This hotel is in the city center (in the center, any location is central, the city is quite small, but you can be far if you are on the other side of Angara River).
I took the cheapest single room that was 40 Euros. Old style, not very clean, noisy (no problem if you like the music), but good breakfast (it is the same for everyody!!!).
It seems there are many businessmen in this hotel, that has a casino, a disco, and many other facilities that I will not promote.
Unique Quality: I did not like this hotel, but I have to admitt some advantages in staying there: they can register your visa and it is cheap because they have their own stamp ( hotel Arena cannot stamp), you can find somebody speaking english at the desk, and there is a small supermarket close to the hotel.
If you really do not know where to stay, it can be a place to go.

Hotel of the Soviet epoch
The Angara Hotel has been called after the great Siberian river and is situated right in the heart of Business and Financial life of Irkutsk - on the Kirov Square, near by the Mayor’s House, the Administration of Irkutsk’s Oblast (Region) and main trade city institutions. There are the most popular recreation places for inhabitants and guests of the Eastern Siberian capital not far from the Angara. It will take 15 minutes to get to Irkutsk airport from the Hotel (map). The Hotel is distinguished not only with a comfortable location but European high-quality service and excellent staff (English-speaking) as well as cleanness, nice surroundings and comfort. There are 475 bunks in the Angara Hotel. Our guests can get comfortable and well equipped single and double hotel-rooms and high-class rooms such as semi-luxury and luxury.
The 5-th and the 6-th floors are worthy of a special attention. They were repaired with the use of modern building materials and high technologies. All rooms are equipped with electronic locking system made by the Spanish firm TESA. Control of access to the floors and into the rooms; in-room safes and energy management system operating are secured with the help of disposable magnetic cards. The atmosphere of a home comfort reigns here and harmonizes in a good way with fine and elegant style. Stylish Italian furniture and bathroom fittings of the firm GROHE (Germany) guarantee the high level of comfort. Every room has in-room safe, TV-set, mini-refrigerator, hair-drier and air-conditioner. You can have direct access to Internet in every room. Air-conditioning system secures constant inflow of the fresh air. Technical equipment, design, furnishing of the rooms surely will impress even the most exacting visitors of the Hotel.
Unique Quality: The Hotel building harmonizes well with the architectural surroundings of the city center. The front of the building that has 7 floors looks conservative and business-like. The windows face the central Irkutsk square - Kirov Square - and the hotel courtyard. You will be impressed by the lights of the Ice Town which is raised there annually in winter. In summer you will be able to enjoy a huge amount of rank vegetation and one of the biggest fountains of the city. If you like peace and quiet you can stay at the rooms where windows face the courtyard. There are stops of the public transport and taxi (24-hours) that are at your disposal just by the Hotel.

Hotel Angara
Unique Quality: When you want good rooms, chose for the 6th or 7th floor. They have better comfort. Also they present you a very good cup of coffee
