Baikal Terema Hotel: Luxury Log Cabin in Siberia

When comparing Russian hotels up to 3-star, it is important to realise you can only really compare them against other Russian hotels. They all tend to be pretty bleak with no service and carry menus with only 40% of the items available. This is bog standard for Russia.

With this in mind, I would rate this hotel as very good. It seems to have been built recently. It is an authentic log cabin construction and all the wood looks new. It has modern amenities: central heat, cable TV, and decent full en-suite bathrooms. There is a dial-up Internet PC in the lobby that is excruciatingly slow, way too expensive, and riddled with adware.

We were there in the dead of winter and we never saw any other guests. The "bar" was closed. The location is slightly out of the way (although I don't know where "downtown" Listvyanka would be), so we were a bit bored.

I would recommend this hotel to others.

The hotel sits on the crest of a hill, so has a great view looking over the village and then Lake Baikal. We could see the lake from our room. There is a snowmobile and x-country ski rental place right next door.

(I couldn't find the hotel's own web site. The URL below is for a travel company that offers accomodation here. In fact, we had used a different travel agent to book the place; we just told them that we wanted this hotel.)

various: Homestay

In a few hours or so you would have seen all the sights of the village it's self, but a night spent here is essential. If you are going to stay most likely you will be in one of the many B and B's or known locally as "Homestays". In these you should be provided with breakfast and dinner aswell as a room either to your self or shared with one or two others. I had the place to myself, which can be a little lonely if you are here more than one night. However it's a good chance to practice your Russian.

In the Homestays you will be in a traditional Siberian log cabin home, but not quite like the Nth American log cabin. Russian homes are charming, heavily insulated and very cosy with enough simple confort of life. This said the toilet and bathroom are located in separate buildings outside, this didn't bother me since it was summer. The Banya is the typical rural Russian bathroom, a wood lined steamroom where water is poured across hot stones - very nice. Russian's are big eaters so you will not starve.

Finding this type of accommodation if passing through isn't difficult as you only have to ask around. I booked mine through the travel company who did my Trans Siberian Railway tickets in advanced.
