Monument to 1200 Guardsmen
by bugulma
Monument to 1200 Guardsmen was placed in Kaliningrad in honour of 150 thousand os soldiers and officers that were killed during Koenigsberg assault in WWII. The monument seems to be the first monument in USSR in honour of victory in WWII. It was open in September of 1945. In 1946 a pair of sculptors, "Assault" and "Victory" were placed on both sides of the monument (2nd photo shows "Victory" sculpture). Since 1960 the monument has the eternal fire. In 2000 the Victory Park was open behind the monument.
The monument is situated not far from crossing of Guardsmen and Moskovsky Prospekts.
Don't forget your documents

Going anywhere in Russia you'll need visa. Visa to Kaliningrad is given free in Russian embassy in your country during 7 days.
Before going to the embassy you must take: passport, 1 foto (3X4) colour and mat, pay for compulsory insurance for the person and car (if you go by car), fill in needed forms (given in embassy) and stand the queue.
And after this hell 7 days later you gonna have visa to Kaliningrad region! Be brave and survive this bureaucrasy as the beach is waiting for you!!! :)) (positive thoughts help)
Don't forget money, better $.
P.S. If you travel by car and cross the border in Sovietsk (expect big queues and waiting for 5-8 hours), you'll have to pay custom taxes for entry (about 170 Rub). If you cross the border in Nida (Curonian Split) you'll pay more: first, in Lithuania - ferry from Klaipeda to the Curonian Split - 45 Lt (for one car and one person) and ecology tax 10-15 Lt, then custom taxes on the Russian border - 170 Rub and then Russian ecology tax - 270 Rub. But no queues.
Königstor
by OlafS
The Königstor ("Kings Gate") is one of several surviving German city gates. There used to be small turrets on every corner, but after the war, when the city was occupied by the Soviet Union, some people thought it great fun to shoot them off. Also the heads were beaten off the three statues. Very mature behaviour indeed, but then communism never created people with high moral standards in the first place. Still, even in this shape it's an attractive sight. Some restoration would be nice though.

Stock building is situated not far from Kant Island. The building was built in 1875 by Heinrich Mueller architect. The interesting fact is the building has 2202 piles 12-18 meters depth each. The building was reconstructed in 1970 (in present there is House of Culture).

As far as I understood it is a tourist attraction, the new-built complex near of cathedral with shoppings, cafes and restaurants. Although the place is quite beatiful and we enjoy little dinner sitting near of Pregolya River.
