You should go to Serbia first (no joke!). I would buy a "City-Star" ticket from Serbia into Russia. Very recently the Serbian railway made an agreement with Russian Railway for a "City-Star" deal, where you can basically buy an unlimited ticket very cheap. A similar deal is already known (EUR 150 for one person) from Slovakia. But now you don't need to travel to Slovakia anymore, Serbia is good.

Bulgaria also has a deal like that - check out http://www.bdz-rila.com/index.php?page=offerCitySTAR#10
However, I think, Serbian deal is probably cheaper. The Bulgarian prices are in Lev. Lev was bound to German Mark at 1:1. Since Mark is no more, the Lev is bound to Euro right now and roughly 2 Leva = 1 EUR. 367 Leva for unlimited travel from Sofia to Khabarovsk and back sounds OK deal for me.

Travel Tips for Khabarovsk

Lenin Square

by bugulma

Lenin Square is the central square of the city. It is a place where two big streets of the city join: Karl Marks Street and Murav’yov-Amursky Street. The square is popular among both tourists and locals. There are many doves here and people feed them.

Lord Mother's Assumption Cathedral

by bugulma

Since Habarovsk's foundation there was Uspensky Cathedral here. But it seems it was destroyed and was built this new cathedral, "not long time ago" as it was told to me. Inside there is just iconostasis, I mean the walls haven’t painting as in many churches in the European part of Russia.

Amur River's Embankment

by bugulma

Embankment is built along the whole length of the city. It is very nice and beautiful although it wasn't illuminated and the only light was moonlight:-). In any way, it's the one of the more beautiful places of the city.

Museum of Habarovsk region

by bugulma

The museum is situated in Shevchenko Street. It has very interesting exhibitions and I insistently recomend you to see it. There is a hall about fauna world (although there are many stuffed animals and birds and I've never seen so many dead animals in one place). Besides you may get to know traditions of nationalities who live here long-long time. Moreover there is very interesting materials about history of the region. The entrance fee is RUR 100 (EUR 3), and RUR 150 for making photos.

Exhibition Hall

by bugulma

In Karl Marx Street the exibition hall is situated (just opposite concert hall). Here you can see the modern art paintings as well as you can buy it right here (prices are varied but most of them are near of 15000-25000 roubles). The entrance fee to the hall is RUR 20 (EUR 0.6).
