Ipat'evsky Monastery
The most historical place in the city. In accordance with a legend the monastery was founded in the last quarter of XIV century by Tatar Murza (=Duke) Chet, who voluntarily came on service to Moscow Duke Ivan Kalita. Legend runs that Chet was ill very bad. He had a halt on the place where monastery will be built later. In his sleep Chet saw the Mother of Our Lord, who said to him that Chet will become healthy if he will build the monastery to Ipaty, saint person for Orthodox. When Chet came to Moscow afterwards, he adopted orthodoxy and built the monastery. The first mention of the monastery in the chronicle was in 1432. In XVI century Ipat'evsky Monastery was taken under control of Godunovs family, one of the richest family od Russia of those times (Boris Godunov, besides, was a Tsar of Russia in the end of XVI – beginning of XVII centuries). Exactly in the end of XVI century the monastery was surrounded by stone walls and fortifications.
