Local "Beverley Hills"

"Znal by prikup - Zhil by v Sochi" - an old Russian saying: 'If I knew "widow" - I should live in Sochi'.


This is Vinogradnaya street in Sochi. It is full of very fashionable villas, that's why local people call it "Beverley Hills".

If you go from this place directly down to the sea (and not be stopped by the guards ;-)) you could possibly see villa "Bocharov Ruchej" - summer residence of the Russian President and a number of guest-houses around it. In one of them president Shirak spent a week last summer.

Sochi and into the mountains

Krasnaya Polyana is famous and has deserved it's own webpage on VT in my albums. However the direct backland of Central Sochi is also worth a trip. Discover the mountain side, the beautiful rivers that run down in between green mountains and form amazing canyons or waterfalls. Over millions of years caves have been created and only a fraction is discovered and can be visited. The Caucasus mountains still hide many of their wonders, but with growing tourism, who knows, you're the next to find out how beautiful it is land inwards from the beaches of Central Sochi. In the next few Off the beaten path-tips, I'll take you along this mountain trail.

Want indoor entertainment: go to the circus

Every Russian (larger) town has one and so Sochi cannot stay behind. An oval or round shaped building with the traditional Russian circus inside (the "Zirk"). Though not many will appear, on cloudy, windy or rainy days one could be entertained here and enjoy a show that is constantly changing.

Beautiful warm water in summer, the favorite area for Russians to vacation.
The natural beach is made of round stones, but many hotels have added sand. You may need shoes for walking on the beach...

33 Waterfalls (On the way)

"33 Waterfalls" is a traditional tourist trip that one can order everywhere in Sochi. I gues 100 of local tourist companies from big to tiny ones offer this tour. I ordered it in travel agency of my hotel "Dagomys". I did not regret as they organize it via tour operator company "Old Mill" wich has some usefull facilities that others have not.

"Starting point"

Comfortable tourist bus with air conditionind will bring you from your hotel somewhere high up in mountains. Trip could take more than two hours (depending of havy traffic in Sochi and starting point). As there is a lacet road the way is only for people with strong vestibular apparatus.

The way goes through the Big Sochi to one of its districts - Loo. Then along the river Shakhe up to the mountains.

For the tourist busses this is the final point, but it is not final for you.

At the end of asphalt road there is a small village with big number of goats and GAZ-66 army trucks. ;-)These trucks used by locals as a ferries to cross the river.

"Tasting home vine"

First point of the tour is degistation.
There you can enjoy wide range of local home vines.

Do not rush to buy it. You will have a lot of opportunities to do it later and to choose from big variety at the final point of the trip - Big Chikmai, or when you will go back to your bus.

"Safari on GAZ-66"

After degustation everyone is loaded into army truck and...
the most unforgettable part of the trip starts.

!a tip!: Those who are not sure in strength of their arms - do not sit near back board - you may fell out.
