Baikal resort: Severobaikalsk I.
Out of the city, but close to the lake. Clean and well equipped, and the staff also can help you arrange various tours around. Also have some, but not always accurate information about the hydrofoil.
Price: 700 Rubels per room or 700 per wooden house (2 beds)

Komnaty otdykha - Resting rooms: Circumbaikal II.: Ulanovo
The best dormitory I have ever seen. The fixed price (aprox. 300 Rubels for 8 hours) is the same as everywhere in Russia, but this small abandoned, spooky house is just renovated in a quite unique way. And almost sure that you will be the only one inside:) In the morning the lady can serve you something to eat for a nominal price. If you arrive late, and noone is around, then knock in the small house left from the hostel. No running water or electricity, but who cares?:)

Camping: Circumbaikal I.: Port-Baikal
I don’t know if there is an offical homestay in this small village, but walk 5 minutes out, and pitch up a tent. Noone will be interested. We slept under the harbour cranes.

Wooden houses: Listvyanka
The only real option is to charter a wooden house. Prices starting from 1200 Rubels for 4 people. Inquire at the tourist office, just where you get off from the bus. The hotels are really expensive.

Nikita's Guesthouse: Olkhon Island III.
The best budget place in whole Russia, so far I saw. The manager (an ex table-tennis national champ) tries to give back as much for the local community as much is possible. If the 700 rubels is out of your budget, it is possible (and recommended) just to have a dinner or breakfast in the yurts. The three meal fixed menues well worth the 120 rubels. Traditional Buryat and Baikal meals. It is also OK to use the showers, even if you don’t stay there. Call ahead, in summer usually operates fullhouse. Also various trips around the island can be prebooked for resonable prices.
Price: 700 Rubels. The showers are a bit dirty and raunchy

Homestays in Khuzir: Olkhon Island II.
Khuzir is the biggest town in Olkhon Island. Most people stay in private houses in Olkhon, prices starting from 500 rubels, all meals included usually. Don’t waste your time and money prebooking any of them in Irkutsk, the ladies wait backpackers at the roundabout. The distances are huge, so if you want to check a couple of options, leave your bag somewhere.
Quality varies from place to place, so check a couple of options

Wildcamp: Olkhon Island I.
The 5 km long sandy beach after the Saman Rock, near Khuzir is a perfect place to spend a couple of days. Quite a lot of Russians pitch up theirs tents for several weeks, mostly youngsters and families. If you keep walking, you can find intimate places. For me it was a unique experince, the families around us were surprised about the fact, that western tourist wildcamp, and invited us for everything. We had omul and vodka:)

Komnaty otdykha - resting rooms: Irkutsk II.
The resting rooms at the train station.
Not available at the time of my visit (2007. Augustus), but scheduled to reopen in 2008. Will be clean and new. Now only the ladies section is open, men can sleep in the waiting room in leather armchairs under strong neon lamps for the same price:)
You pay for bad and for hour (6 hours is the minimum). Left luggage is not free!
clean, cheap, and just rigth at the train station

Downtown Hostel: Irkutsk I.
Small hostel. I think the best of the three private ones. Really clean, and if full (usually in summer), they will find you a bed in one of the others for the same price.
Dormitory: 500 Rubels
Clean, close to city center, english speaking staff

Nikita's Guesthouse: "All inclusive" at Lake Baikal
This is "the place" to stay on Olkhon island. Nikita has different huts, all very cosy with an old Russian oven. Full board is included the price of 500 Roubles/night. The food is good and you get free coffee/tea/water all day. Toilets are basic, but you get a real Russian banya! So far there's no electricity on the island (planned for summer 2005), so it depends on generators so far, meaning very limited supply. Nikita organizes all kind of trips for fair prices.
