Most Crappy Experience

I had stayed this crappy hotel recently and I could not understand why the advertisement would have 3 or 4 stars as it definitely is simply a one-star hotel with dirty towels, dirty bed and dirty floor. I could not recall any facilities similar to a swimming pool. Liar.
Definitely possibly the worst hotel you can find in the golden ring region.
The administrators were rude and grumpy.
If you do not want your travel be spoiled, please stay away from this hell as far as you can.

Unique Quality: Where is the pool?

Review of Aristokrat Hotel, Sergiev Posad

I stayed in Aristokrat Hotel, Sergiev Posad in late Feb 2011. I booked online directly with the hotel. Upon arrival I was met by a very unfriendly check-in woman who charged me the rack-rate rather than the online rate I was emailed. I showed her my confirmed email booking but she just shrugged her shoulders and said her book does not show my booking so I need to pay rack-rate. Very unfriendly staff in the hotel. The room was a disgrace. Open pipes in the bathroom, dirty shower curtains, no hot water (no water in the tap...not even cold water), half painted doors and walls. Very boring breakfast. This hotel should cost no more than RUR900 and I had to pay RUR2400. Waste of time and money with this place. Please avoid it.

Unique Quality: Win my prize for the worst staff and worst hotel I stayed in during my 8 city trip of Russia.

the trains go 1h20min-1h30min, there are some express trains (a bit more expensive) that go 1 hour. the trains go quite fast, 2-3 trains per hour. for now the ticket is RUR 96 (EUR 2.7) one way. just in case :-), last train from Sergyiev Posad goes at 22.45 :-))

More comfortable way to get to Sergiev Posad is intercity bus #388. It goes every 10 minutes from metro station VDNkHa (orange line). I use it very often :)

Travel Tips for Sergiyev Posad

Churches outside the monastery

by HORSCHECK

I visited Sergiyev Posad in a daytrip by train. Of course the main sight of the city is the the Trinity Monastery of St Sergius Lavra. Nevertheless on my stroll through Sergiev Posad I came across two other churches.

I noticed the light blue Ascension Church on my way from the train station to the monastery. It is situated next to a little park at the busy street Prospekt Krasnoy Armii.

Another interesting church can be found just a 10 minutes walk to the north of the monastery. At the street ulitsa 1-y Udarnoy Armii stands the blue white coloured Church of Saints Apostles Peter and Paul.

Trinity Lavra Historic Background

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is considered to be one of the most important Russian monasteries and the spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church. That’s why it’s one of the more often visited monasteries around Moscow. The monastery was founded in 1345 by one of the most venerated Russian saints, Sergius of Radonezh. He built here a wooden church in honor of the Holy Trinity.

St. Sergius was declared patron saint of the Russian state in 1422. The same year the first stone Cathedral was built by a team of Serbian. The relics of St. Sergius still may be seen in this Cathedral, dedicated to the Holy Trinity. Traditionally Muscovite royals were baptized in this cathedral and held thanksgiving services here.

War Memorial

by dlandt

Outside the fortress is a war memorial. You see quite a few of these scattered throughout Russia This one is a bit nicer and larger than many. For anyone who doesn't know. WWII was really a defining moment in russian History. they suffered tremendous casualties and eventually won. My personal opinion is that the Russian Front was, for all intents and purposes, the only one which really mattered and the victory the Russians achieved probably saved Communism by igniting a patriotic fever of unprecedented proportions. Needless to say, they stoked that flame with memories and memorials liek the one you see here. Note that they still leave flowers at these memorials. I didn't place them there.

Getting to the Monastery

by don_kam

As the Monastery is not visible from the train station, you need to know the general direction to walk....

This is very important as there are no sign or direction from the train station. A rough map from LP is essential...

St. Sergius

by Canadienne

St. Sergius came from a wealthy family, but as an adult, he renounced his possessions and wealth shortly thereafter and became a monk. He established the monastery of the Holy Trinity in 1340 ~ it's one of forty which he is credited with founding.

The Trinity Monastery is considered one of Russia's most important religious centres. It's located about an hour outside of Moscow. . .and the importance and sheer beauty of the site make a visit worthwhile.
