bed was extremely old. rooms were small but average for european stanards. food and room were very over priced

Hard to avoid and hard to love

Well, this is a VERY soviet style hotel. It is really big and bulky and has been undergoing some renovation over the last years (some floors of the hotel) - but it is not very beautiful. Actually I will be honest and say that it is ugly.

However it was not really expensive when I stayed there and it served the purpose; I needed a clean bed for a few nights.

Unique Quality: If you favour western quality hotels pick the suites. The standard rooms are rare and ugly representatives of the soviet times.

Sibir' Hotel***

Sibir' Hotel is situated in the central part of the city, in 5 minutes by walk from Lenin Square and other central tips as well as in 2 minutes by walk from the railway station. The single room I ived in was RUR 3100 (EUR 90) per night, the breakfast included.

A little bit better

I was staying there several times. Quite good hotel.
This can be recommed.
High quality of services. 2 restaurants of Russian and European cuisine, 2 bars, banquet hall, shop, sauna with pool, casino, hairdresser`s, currency exchange point. Center of business services with rooms for negotiations and offices, a small printing house, computer center, conference hall for 100 persons

Development of Siberia by Russians and Cossacks: a bit of history

In the middle of 13th century Siberia was seized by Tartar-Mongols. Siberia was included into the Golden Horde, and later into Siberia and Tyumen Khanates. The main reasons for Russians to start moving to the east was need in raw materials, including metals, as well as finalization of relationship with Siberia Khanate.

The first Russians to penetrate into Siberia (16th century, during Ivan’s the Terrible rule) were northern voivodes (heads of local troops) and Cossacks (Ermak). In 17th century Russian geographers Dezhnev and Popov found way through Siberia to the Okhotskoye sea, which fact started new era in development of eastern lands.

This area was always used for remote prisons; before the communist revolution for 'ostrogs', and later for GULAG camps. But camps and oil are not the only attractions of Siberia. The region has a highly developed industry, including refinery, machinery, metals, timber, chemicals. What is also important, Siberian universities are widely recognized worldwide, and the most famous of them are The Novosibirsk State University (http://www.nsu.ru/english/), and The Tomsk State University. They offer the hightest level of education and have strongest departments of scientific research in various fields.

First cities were also founded by Cossacks and Russians in the 16th century. In the picture you see old city of Tyumen (photo of the end of 19th century). Below is the way Tyumen looks now.
