I would like to know where the music, dance and opera concerts take place. Is Orel an artistic community? Are there music conservatories where one might gain employment as a voice teacher. Are there performance opportunities for classically trained singers, in concert or in the theater?

The church was built in 1801-1817 on the place where were 2 churches before, Mikhailo-Archangelskaya and Uspenskaya Churches. That's the reason why the church has two names. Till 1860 the bell tower was stayed apart. In Soviet times it was cosed (since 1932) and used as storehouse. In 1989 the church was returned to the Orthodox church and since 1990 it is open for services.
Waling into the streets in Orel is quite enough interesting way to spend time. Although most of buildings have the Sovit architecture (the city was destroyed a lot during WWII) but it is the good examples of Soviet style, for exampe, you may see it in Moskovskaya Street (on the photo).
In 70 km to the South there is "Orlovskoye Poles'e" nature reserve. I was there during one evening in the end of my business trip with my colleagues. There is nice hotel complex and we had dinner there and enjoyed the pond in front of it. Then we went to the little menagerie in 2-3 km. It was strange to see animals in the reserve :-)
We came here to visit my wife's former colleague, and I knew nothing about Orel and its history. As it turned out.......
One of Russias famous writers was born here, and a major battle was won here against the Germans in World War 11........ what more do you need?
I was in Orel 4 days for my business trip. Unfortunately I didn't see much and only 2 evenings during my staying in the city I spent walking into the streets.
Orel was founded in 1566 as a fortress in the southern borders of the Russian country of those times. In the beginning of XVII century the city was ravaged by Crimea Tatar troops and then was destroyed by Polish Army. In 1636 the fortress was rebuilt and guarded the territory till XVIII century when the Russia began to enlarge. Since 1778 Orel is the center o one of the Russian province.
Orel is the motherland of some famous persons in Russian culture such as Ivan Turgenev writer, Granovsky historian. Besides here were spent years of life of Russian famous writers Ivan Bunin and Nikolay Leskov.
