Nevskaya Hotel: Pleasant setting
Hotel Nevskaya is a small 3-star hotel that opened in 2004 across the Lososinka River from downtown Petrozavodsk. Set in the middle of a birch grove, it is a pleasant 10-minute walk along a series wooded trails from Prospekt Marksa, one of Petrozavodsk's two main streets.
Our room was larger than we were used to and the price includes a satisfying buffet breakfast, sure to fill you up if you start indulging in the meat and pasta offerings like most Russian tourists do! While the staff did not speak English, they were very friendly and appreciative of our efforts to communicate in Russian.
The best example of the hotel's courteous service came when we asked one of the hotel's employees (who I suspect was the manager) if she had something in which we could put our newly-purchased matrioshka doll. She initially said no, but a few minutes later, she knocked at our door and asked us if an old cardboard box she had just found would do. It was perfect, but even if it hadn't been, her good intentions would have been much appreciated.

Maski Hotel (The Masks): Upscale hotel
As the Severnaya could only offer us a room with no shower or toilet for the second night, we moved to the Masks. It is located behind the Theatre (as in real life play on stage, not movies). This is an upscale hotel, which is reflected by the prices, much higher than your average Russian hotel. In addition to being a hotel, it is also a theatre/acting club.
When we arrived, they only had a luxury room available, at an entire 3000 roubles/night - for two people, that's 1500 roubles/night/person, or about 46 Euros/person/night. Considering what we god for that money, I have no complaints, other than the fact that we had to pay extra for the breakfast - and the location.
There is a night club next to the hotel. At about 1am, they cranked up the music, and there was a LOT of noise outside, making it difficult to sleep.
Double sized shower. TWO toilets. Yes, TWO toilets, in individual stalls and separate from the shower room. (Though you have to walk through the shower room to get to the stalls.)
The restaurant is unique with its round shape and domed ceiling.
