Kremlin. Siyumbike Tower
by bugulma
There is a legend that Ivan IV wished to marry Kazan Princess to strengthen an influence in the region after getting Kazan by storm. The princess asked tsar to build the highest power and to give her as a present and only then she'll be married the tsar. The tower was built in 7 days. Then princess climbed the roof and jumped down. Beautiful story but only legend. In reality the princess was removed 2 years earlier of the storm. The tower has an incline in 2 meters cause of mistakes in the first stages of building process. Later the inclination was stopped
Weather in Kazan
by Lighthouseman
In my opinion, there are six season in a year in Kazan: spring, summer, Indian Summer, autumn, early winter and latest winter. I find my classification very helpful for visitors.
If you come to Kazan when spring comes (april - may) you wind nature awakens from its long winter sleep. The sky is blue and cloudless, the sun shines brightly. The trees are in full blossom and the ground is covered with emerald-green grass and multicoloured flowers. It is usually warm or even hot during the day (+15+22 C), but temperature can sink to 0 +5 C at nights. This season is good for sights seeing.
The weather is usually fine in summer (June - August), but it can be very hot, especially in July (+30 +40 C). Sometimes there are rains, storms or hails. Summer is suitable for all activities: fishing, hiking, cycling, swimming in lakes and rivers etc.
Indian Summer lasts during approx all September. It is most picturesque period in a year in my city, unfortunately, it is so short. It's still warm during a day (+15 +25 C), however it gets colder and colder.
It often rains in October and November. Autumn is awful season in Kazan. There are puddles and mire on the streets, cars are sprinkle with dirty waters pedestrians and it's really cold (0 +5 C). I would strongly not recommend you to came to see Kazan in this unpleasant season.
The early winter starts with the first snow in December and it lasts till the middle of February. It's too cold (-15 -5 C) but very beautiful. Everything is covered with amazing white snow. It's so good for skiing, skating, mountain skiing. It is a pretty good chance to you for celebration Russian New Year with drinking vodka, driving in a sledge and visiting Russian Banya (Sauna).
The next season is very unpleasant for visiting Kazan. The latest winter is cold (-30 -15 C) and windy. White snow turns into dark grey. There are mire form dirty snow, sand and salt on the streets and it is mortally for your shoes. I suppose visiting The Caribbean is the best thing you have to do!
Central Stadium
by Nuclei
This is the home for Rubin Kazan football team. Dependent on the growth and wealth in Tatarstan, the victories in sporting events also started to increase. Rubin Kazan won the championship in Russia in 2008 and 2009. They have also beaten Barcelona last year at Nou Camp in Champions League.
However, even there is a big success in football, ice hockey is still the most popular sport in Tatarstan. Kazan Ak Bars (Snow Leopards) is also a very successful team.
Suyumbike Tower
by ozalp
“Bike” means woman, maiden and/or princess in old Turkish. Süyüm Bike means Princess Suyum. She was the wife of Safa Giray Khan. After the death of her husband, she ruled the country. But during the Russian siege, her people wanted to give Suyum Bike and her son Otemis to Tsar Ivan as captives. They were planning to save the city by sacrificing their princess. Unfortunately their plan didn’t work and they lost both their city and their princess.
She was forced to marry to Sheikh Ali by Tsar. Her son died when he was only 8 years old.
There is a more romantic story about the tower. It is about the love of Tsar to Suyumbike. She couldn’t refuse his proposal and wanted him to build the highest building of Kazan in 7 days as a condition. Tsar achieved the goal but Suyumbike committed suicide by throwing herself down from the tower.
Turkish women were so powerful in history. In our former tribes, women were warriors like any men. So, I prefer to dream about Suyumbike as a warrior who fought for her country.
It is a leaning tower. I think it is because of Kazan is situated on a river basin. The ground of river basins is not rigid enough. You can see the tower is leaning through the Residence of President.
Bogoyavlenskyi Temple (Epiphany Temple)
by bugulma
Bogoyavlenskaya Church is situated in Bauman Street, it's next tip after Shalyapin Monument. First of all, you see a bell tower and behind it the church is situated. Interior of the church is very poor and only iconostasis may attract your attention. Walls are empty. I had a talking with a old woman and she said there is no money and it seems uncolored walls will exist long times. The church was built in 1741 on the place where wooden church existed since XVI century. The bell tower was built in 1895-1897 and it's 74 meters high.
