St.John's: Main Street Hotel

We stayed at this hotel/hostel three times during our pilgrimages.
There are two rooms: a men's room with foru beds and a ladies' room with four beds.
The oven is in the ladies' room. It is heated with firewood and provides a lot of heat.
When we stayed there, just the two of us, we did not heat the oven at all.
We were provided with two buckets of water and with food by laysister Lena who is a household manager at the church.

Unique Quality: The place where Elder Philip of Luhansk used to stay;
Old Cossacks' house,
central location,
the church and the fields are across the street,
big garden (neglected).

St.John the Evangelist: Khutor Hotel

St.John the Evangelist - this is my name for that church hotel.
The villagers simply call it a church hotel.
We were privileged to stay at this village hotel as pilgrims.
To be able to stay there, we had to ask Father Sergiy for his blessing, as required by the Orthodox pilgrim rules.
Father Sergiy lives in the neighboring village of Mozhayevka located six miles away.
He is the dean of three village churches in the vicinity.
We had to hire a car in Yelan to be able to meet him and to ask him for his blessing.
Laysister Lena accompanied us and received orders from Father Sergiy.
He blessed us to stay at the church hotel and the church laysisters brought the keys.
The hotels occupies an old Cossacks house in School Street and is located right opposite St.John the Evangelist Church.
The hosts provided us with bed linen, cutlery, water, and meals.
According to Orthodox pilgrim rules, there was no charge, we could only offer a donation.

Unique Quality: Philip of Luhansk used to stay here in the thirties when he visited his friends in Yelan.
The hotel is located opposite the church and is close to the pond and to Lena's house.
Lena was our host there.
There is no electricity in the house, so we used a kerosene lamp.
And, of course, I brought a flashlight that was useful during our evening stroll.
Surprisingly, old benches are still preserved in the house. So we sat at those benches under what used to be the traditional icons corner and had our tea. There are no icons anymore, but the fixing screws are still there.
This old Cossacks' house would make a good hotel provided some repair is performed inside and some cleaning outside.
