Sights to see in February

by Bossanovaman

I'll be in Ekaterinburg for one week in two weeks. I know it will be cold but can anyone suggest any interesting sights to see while I'm there?

You can visit the newly built monastary at Ganina Yama and the museums there.

In winter time there is an Ice Play Town in the central square. When I was there a couple of years ago, it was very fascinating architecture.

Hi the ice place will be gone by the time you arive. Jist walk atound and look, it is a nice town. You can take a excursion to the place where the tsar and his family was burried, just 30km away. Ask around or look at the VT site for adresses. See what is on at the theater, they often have good opera or ballet. And yes it will be cold.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. We had a wonderful week there and made some new friends. We visited the cathedral and also visited the town of Neviansk, about one hour's drive outside of Ekaterinburg, once the capital of the Ural Mountains. We hope to visit the monastery at Ganina Yamin on our next trip there, probably in May.

A dramatic episode in the area took place on May 1, 1960 when American U2 spy plane pilot Francis Gary Powers was hit by a missile launched from the local military base. The city was closed to the outside world until 1990 because of its strategic defense industries.

Take a tram to the end station.

by jfkfamily

And than go back. But remember the station you got on it and tram´s number.
The reason I sugest you take a tram is that trams go on the railways. If you waited too long for it to go back to your station, you can guess the direction somehow. With buses or trolleybuses it will be almost impossible.

It will be a nice excursion and cost you almost nothing.

In rush hours stay next to the windows and do not get nervous.

THE CHURCH OF ASCENSION. FOUNDED IN 1972 AND WAS BEING BUILT FOR ABOUT A CENTURY. IN THE FIRST SOVIET YEARS IT HOUSED EXEMPLARY SCHOOL; DURING 1941-44 IT'S PREMISES WAS USED TO KEEP PART OF THE HEEMITAGE'S EVACUATED COLLECTION OF MASTER PIECES; LATER STILL IT WAS THE HISTORY DEPARTAMENT OF THE MUSEUM OF LOCAL LORE. RECENTLY THE TEMPLE HAS BEEN RETURNED TO GOD-BELIEVERS. THE CHURCH IS THE ONLY CITY'S RUSSIAN BAROQUE-STYLED TEMPLE.

I guess everybody has to visit the Romanov Memorial Site, right? As of my visit, the locals are building a grand cathedral to honor the former royal family. For now, though, they have this small, tasteful memorial.
