The House of the Ural's Head Forester
by xenia
Gimnazitcheskaya Embankment, (now Working Youth Embankment, #2) was built in the first third of the 19th century after M.P.Malakhov’s design.
In keeping with the Ural tradition the houses of Mining and Forestry Heads stood side by side: up to the end of the 18th century metallurgical works used only char-coal for fuel, thus being totally dependent upon wood.
At present the mansion is the Center for International Peace and Friendship.
The US Consulate
by Upstate1NY
Talk about hidden, "Off the Beaten Path", this was about as obscure as it could get, no sign age, a real "side street" location, in an area that does not look at all inviting to the wary eye. Right across the street was a house that was falling in, the roof was collapsed, the windows broken, the door sagged off the hinges, it was about as derelict as anything you could find. and it's "neighbors" across the street were the US and British Consulates!!
The only real "give away" was the US flag!. The breeze had caught the flag and it was right out stiff, but by the time I got my camera out for a nice shot, the wind had died down. Perhaps it was all my pawing around for the camera in my bag that caught the eyes of the Russian guards. They intercepted me about a block from the consulate and "REQUESTED" my passport! I was not thinking as clearly as I should have been when I dressd that morining, I was wearing a black sport coat, black slacks and black turtle neck sweater, (about as close as you can get to a "uniform" for the Russian "man about town"!!) given that I have been mistaken for a Russian more than a few times, I noticed the guards amazment when I produced an American passport and spoke English without any hesitation. (I did remember to say спасибо (spaceba = thanks) when they returned it!!), again with a touch of uncertainty, but they did let me continue on my way.
Outdoor Machinery Museum
by Upstate1NY
Located on the south side of the canal are remains of old factories that have been stabilized, "stylized" and redesigned as an outdoor machinery museum with representative samples of equipment from a by-gone era of industrialization.
Ansgar's new Yekaterinburg Page
by Ansgar
On our tour through Russia we did our first stop in Yekaterinburg (today's name for Swerdlowsk). We were glad to know some people there, who very rapidly became very good friends. They gave us the first lessons about Russia and belive me: we needed them! How to buy groceries, how to buy train tickets, how to get around...
