Biy-Khem Camp (formerly known as Camp Ai): The best place to stay in all of Siberia!
None of the hotel options in our guidebook sounded very appealling, so we decided to give this traditional yurt camp a try, and we were certainly glad we did! This was one of the best experiences I have ever had. Even though the camp doesn't have running water or telephone, it was thoroughly clean and comfortable. Big felt tents, nice new bedding, chemical toilets and showers with heated water straight from the river.
Unique Quality: The location is gorgeous! Situated right next to the river with scrub-covered hills looming in the back, it's a quiet and peaceful place to think, hike, fish, or even swim (if you don't mind the cold water!). The camp owner, Artur, speaks several languages (including English), and is incredibly helpful. He can drive you places or hook you up with locals or a guide, and he'll happily share some vodka with you in the evening. Meals are provided at the camp, and they are fantastic--fresh meat and veggies grilled over an open fire.
