How do I go about booking a hotel in Volgograd ??. Every hotel I try to book comes up unavailable regardless of which dates I choose !!. Any help would be greatly recived.

I know you asked some time ago and I am too late for you, but if somebody else is searching, so I though tit might be helpful.

October 15, 1967 is the date of the opening the Mamaev Kurgan memorial complex. The place was chosen cause it was the pace with the most awful fights during Stalingrad Battle. After the war it was found 500-1250 shell-splinter on each quarter meter and the grass couldn't grow long time cause 10 centimeters layer of the splinters.

The scattered History of communisum around the city. FOG, FOG, FOG
From November to Jan very very foggy or misty. Difficult to take photographs as everything looks flat and colourless.
Also the airport doesn't operate well when its foggy. If flying out of the city you can expect an unintended extra night or two.
Volgograd is great at May. It is bright, green and clean. Unfortunately internet could not transmit smells of spring flowers and blooming trees. Chestnuts, lilacs and bird cherry trees - a must attribute of Russian south towns.
The complex was built by Vuchetich architect and it is begun in the lowest position with entrance composition that shows a group of people. It symbolized sorrow and gratitude for the victory, you can see woman and a child as well as some men figures.
