Luchesa Hotel: Best Hotel In Vitebsk?

As we arrived at Luchesa Hotel my first impression was this will be another modern comfortable hotel. The street view of the hotel was impressive.

However the hotel rooms made me think they remained unchanged from Soviet Union times. Very small and basic rooms, single beds which were extremely small with my legs to long for the bed but restricted by the old refrigerator at the bed end. The TV was very old and non English programs. This was not a worry as we were not in Belarus to watch TV.

The hotel web page states this hotel was built in 2004, I find this hard to believe as the rooms do not give this impression.

Our room was on the 4th floor which only had rooms to the left half of the building. The other half of each floor was a lounge. Very puzzeling until we were informed it was a remnant from the Soviet era. During those times you could not have access to your room during the day. A warden controlled each floor, managed the room keys and guests used the lounge area until the warden issued each guest their key around 10pm. The warden collected keys the next morning.

The shower was a problem, no hot water until it was run for 10 minutes. Thank god I used the shower before my wife!

The staff were very helpful, always trying to please. The breakfast was an experience, everything extremely sweet, chocolate bars, sweet biscuits etc etc. Plenty of variety and we found something for a light breakfast.

On reflection this overnight stay was a good experience. It reminded me of how well off we are.
