housing - Bratislava

by marchbank

I will be teaching at VSM starting in the Fall 2010.

What housing might be available around the University at a reasonable cost? Any recommendations for the best places to live considering where I will be working?

Would it be possible to house sit or care for a home if the owners are away for an extended period of time?

Jim

Re: housing - Bratislava

by katamorgana

This answer is more difficult.

BA is not too cheap in accomodation.

VSM is situated in a biggest housing developments in Slovakia - Petrzalka.
I do not think so there are houses around at all. Only blocks of flats.
I guess, You could rent a flat in Petrzalka and walk to work, or a house somewhere around BA and use a transport.
The nearest villages with houses are Jarovce and Rusovce 4-5 km from VSM. Public transport drives quite often.

House sitting is quite uncommon - I would ignore that option.
Familiarize yourself with the layout of Bratislava-Petrzalka resp. other suburbs.
Just google "petrzalka" in images to see what it is like, or google "petrzalka rent" or "bratislava rent". Try googleing variations on that theme of rent and apartnent share etc.
There are many sources there.

The Main Square of the...

by mocneto

The Main Square of the medieval town constitutes the centre of the historical core. The most important events have happened here since the 14th century. Besides regular markets, all gatherings, celebrations and executions took place here. All the houses on the square have an older Gothic core, several of them were built prior to the fortification of the town as defensive houses with towers. The sandstone Renaissance Maximilian´s Fountain and circular reservoir stand in the centre of the square.

Popular meeting place

by easterntrekker

Hodzovo Square (Peace Square then) Globe Fountain built during communist times used to be a symbol of peace in the world, but still nowadays it is very popular meeting place among young people. It is well understandable as there are plenty of public transport lines servicing Hodzovo square driving from the different parts of Bratislava including the largest one: Bratislava-Petrzalka.

How to get there
By buses going to Hodzovo Square directly (no. 34, 83, 84, 93) - the Globe Fountain is in the middle of the square, you may need to use the underground passage to get there.

By trolleybuses going to Hodzovo Square directly (no. 203, 206, 207, 208, 212) - the Globe Fountain is in the middle of the square, you may need to use the underground passage to get there.

Slovak Natural History Museum

by Imbi

It is not justice to compare this museum with London Natural History Museum as both are different cities.
This museum contains the natural history exhibitions of the Slovak National Museum. It also houses the Library of the Slovak National Museum and also offices for adiministration.
Address-: Vajanského nábrezie

Primate´s Palace

by Vlasta

Primate´s Palace - the former seat of the President, here was signed a peace treaty by Napoleon. (The Old Town Hall is in the background.) This buliding has a great deal of history. For example, in 1904 the building was bought by the city when it wanted to expand its Town Hall. So the Archbishop of Esztergon sold it. But then the city construction workers found hidden inside the walls a set of tapestries depicting the "Never Ending Love of Hera and Leandros", which was made in 1630. The tapestries were extremely rare and very valuable - they were made in London and only three sets remain today, one in Manchester, one in Stockholm and one here. When the church found out, they sued the city for more money, but lost.
